Police Make Drug Arrest
On August 20th officers of the Cumberland Police Department served an Arrest Warrant on Belen Marie Waybright. The Arrest Warrant was issued by the District Court when Waybright failed to appear for her trial on August 19th, 2021. Once Waybright was placed under arrest officers located controlled dangerous substance paraphernalia. Waybright was issued a Criminal Citation for possession of paraphernalia and taken before a District Court Commissioner where she was held on a $2,000 bond. Baltimore Man Arrested after brief Stand Off
At approximately 2:54pm Friday deputies with the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office Warrant Division and Cumberland City Police attempted to serve a felony Baltimore City warrant on Calvin V. Evans at 119 Independence Street, Cumberland, Allegany County. When officers and deputies approached the residence Evans fled into the house and refused to surrender. With the assistance of the Allegany/Garrett Crisis Negotiation Team, Evans surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody. Evans was transported to the Allegany County Central Booking where he is awaiting his initial appearance before a District Court Commissioner. Maryland reports 1,206 new COVID-19 cases for Friday, highest since April 17
Maryland's latest COVID-19 surge continues to gain steam. The state is reporting its biggest one-day total of new cases in more than four months today, 1,206 new cases. WBAL reports it is the third day in a row with more than a 1,000 new cases and the biggest one-day total since April 17. The positivity rate remains above 5% at 5.06% and the number of deaths in Maryland since the pandemic started has moved above 9,700 today. COVID-19 Numbers Skyrocketing in Allegany County
COVID-19 cases continue to grow in Allegany County while vaccination rates remain low. The case rate in the county is now nearly double the statewide average. As of August 19, 41.7% of Allegany County residents were fully vaccinated against COVID-19, compared to 60.1% of all Marylanders. Health officials continue to urge unvaccinated members of the public to get their vaccine as soon as possible. America’s 9/11 Ride Travels Through Cumberland
A group of motorcyclists honoring those killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks made their way through downtown Cumberland Friday morning. COVID Measures will be part of DelFest 2021
DelFest 2021 is scheduled for September 23rd through the 26th at the Allegany County Fairgrounds- however with COVID-19 numbers on the rise- details are still being finalized. The festival, which had to be cancelled last year as a result of the pandemic, is one of the more popular events in the region attracting thousands from every part of the United States and other countries. Task Force looking at Eviction Process
Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh this week announced the membership of the Access to Counsel in Evictions Task Force, which will take effect starting October 1st. The task Force, created by an act of the General Assembly, will focus on helping to ensure that tenants facing eviction from their homes will have access to proper legal representation. Frosh told WBAL that that landlords have a tremendous advantage over tenants in most cases that end up in court- primarily because many of those people facing eviction simply can’t afford a lawyer.. Thousands in Western Maryland Eligible For Free Insurance
Recent data reveals that there are approximately 350,000 uninsured Maryland residents. The state estimates that about 120.000 of them are eligible for free health care coverage. Governor Hogan says Maryland Handling COVID Surge
Earlier this week, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan called on the FDA to give full approval for COVID-19 vaccinnes. Hogan said the state conducted a survey, and that the number one response people gave for not getting a vaccine is because it isn’t FDA approved. Despite no FDA approval, Hogan said about 80% of state employees are vaccinated.
