10 Local Students Earn Paid IBM Internships

CDC extends eviction moratorium a month

The Biden administration has extended the nationwide ban on evictions for a month to help tenants who are unable to make rent payments during the coronavirus pandemic, but it said this is expected to be the last time it does so. Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, extended the evictions moratorium until July 31. It had been scheduled to end June 30. DelFest, Cumberland Theatre to Receive COVID Relief Funding

DelFest and the Cumberland Theatre will receive a share of funding previously announced by Governor Hogan for performance venues and entertainment promoters impacted by the pandemic. The DelFest promoter grant will be $158,105, while the theatre will receive $61,760. This year's DelFest was rescheduled for late September because of the pandemic. Subject in Custody After Series of Local Thefts

On Thursday, June 23rd, 2021, Officers with the Cumberland City Police Department responded to a residence in the 800 block of Highland Dr for the report of a breaking and entering. Contact was made with the owner of the home who advised that they had been awakened by a male subject who had entered their home unlawfully through an unlocked door. Harley Legends & Lore Rally Returning to Cumberland

After being canceled last year by the pandemic- the Harley Davidson Legends and Lore Rally is returning to Cumberland.  The Harley Owners Group will be coming be in town Thursday through Sunday,  June 24-27.   Registered attendees are estimated to be 600 to 1,000 plus and consist of Harley Davidson owners from around the country and Canada. Riders will be riding to various locations in Maryland, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Evening events will be hosted by various businesses at Canal Place and downtown. Local Hospital Volunteer Receives National Spotlight

Good Morning America recently featured the efforts of Jeanie Shaffer, a local volunteer from Hyndman who has made over 11,000 hats for newborn babies at UPMC Western Maryland.  Mrs. Shaffer has been knitting hats for infants to stay warm for more than 15 years. City Police Working to Acquire Body Cams

A Maryland public defender is pushing Ocean City to put a police department body-worn camera program in place. The request comes on the heels of  two violent arrests on the Ocean City boardwalk. CEDC Director: City Still Interested in Relocating Rescue Mission if Possible

Although the executive director of the Union Rescue Mission said this week that talks with the Cumberland Economic Development Corporation about finding a new location for the local homeless shelter had broken off- city officials aren’t yet ready to move on from the project. Comptroller’s Workgroup Hears Pandemic Spending Overview

Comptroller Peter Franchot today hosted the second meeting of the Comptroller's Workgroup on Pandemic Spending.  Representatives from the state's Commerce and Housing and Community Development departments told the panel that the largest chunks of aid supported small businesses and rental assistance initiatives. "These two agencies are the largest disbursers of pandemic relief," Comptroller Franchot said. "Their presentations today provided valuable insights into how state and federal dollars were distributed, which industries and jurisdictions were prioritized, and how far those dollars went as our residents, families and businesses were battered by the pandemic."
