Fatal Accident in Hagerstown

Friday at 0405 AM, Troopers from the Hagerstown Barrack responded to the area of southbound Interstate 81 at Rt. 40 for a motor vehicle collision involving a truck tractor and a pedestrian. The initial investigation revealed the tractor trailer was traveling S/B I-81 at Rt. 40 when it struck a pedestrian in the roadway.          The operator of the tractor trailer was Bakhovoddin Murshiddinov 47, of Hagerstown.  The pedestrian was Jonathan Monroe 50, of Hagerstown.  Mr. Monroe was pronounced deceased at the scene of the collision.         The collision is under investigation, Maryland State Police Accident Reconstructionist, M/Tpr….

City Man Charged with Possession, Burglary, Disorderly Conduct

On Thursday, June 24th, 2021 the Cumberland Police Department responded to the area of Valley Street for the report of an intoxicated male yelling in the street.  When officers arrived, they located the male in question who was identified as Johnathon Bobby Daniel Tichinel.  While speaking with Tichinel, officers were approached by two residents on Valley Street who stated prior to their arrival, Tichinel had knocked several times on their door and when they answered, he tried to force his way in and they had to push him back and close the door.   Tichinel was arrested and a search of…

A mini crime spree that extended from the West Side to the Country Club on Wednesday ended with the arrest of a 27-year-old Cumberland man who now faces theft, burglary, vehicle theft and destruction of property charges. While no one was hurt during those various criminal acts, there were some tense moments. Biden Cites Baltimore as Example of Need for New Gun Laws

President Joe Biden mentioned Baltimore several times during remarks made this week following a roundtable meeting on gun violence. Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott attended the roundtable meeting at the White House, focusing on his holistic approach to crimefighting. The president announced new efforts to focus on addressing gun violence, providing money to cities that need more police and offering community support. Addressing why tough gun laws are needed, the president said the federal government needs to act to help local jurisdictions across city and state lines.

Lt. Governor Unveils Overdose Prevention Campaign

Lt. Governor Boyd Rutherford Thursday announced the launch of the Maryland Stop Overdose Strategy (Maryland SOS), a multifaceted, interdisciplinary campaign to reduce overdose deaths of individuals experiencing substance use disorders. The announcement comes as the Opioid Operational Command Center (OOCC) and Maryland Department of Health (MDH) release a report showing a 5.7% increase in overdose deaths involving drugs and alcohol between January and March 2021 compared with the same period in 2020…                                                   

Trone Hosts Student Mental Health Webinar

In light of the record number of students reporting mental health challenges across the country, the office of U.S. Congressman David Trone hosted a webinar this week on how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted student mental health. Parents and students had the opportunity to hear from a panal of that included teachers, principals and student representatives. During the webinar, the group discussed the alarming rise in poor mental health among youth.  According to Mental Health America, young people are struggling the most with managing their mental health. Police Serve Summonses

On Wednesday, June 23rd, 2021, The Cumberland City Police served a Criminal Summons on Charles Robert Bauman II, 50, of Cumberland MD. The summons stemmed from an incident that occurred on June 21st, 2021 at a residence in the 200 block of Paca St. During that incident it is alleged that Bauman assaulted a female subject in the home. Outbuilding damaged by fire in Baltimore Pike area

According to the Allegany County Department of Emergency Services, no injuries were reported when fire erupted in an outbuilding at 12100 House Drive in the Baltimore Pike area late Thursday morning. More than two dozen volunteer firefighters responded to the scene following initial alert by the Allegany County 911 center at 11:51 a.m. The Cumberland Times News reports first-arriving Baltimore Pike and Bedford Road volunteer fire units reported fire on all four sides of the 40-by-50-foot structure and that all the occupants had safely exited.
