The Mineral County Fair’s return after a year’s hiatus has been a hit with large crowds all week. The 72nd annual fair wraps up today and tonight with the band 28 Speedway will round out fair week with shows at 7 and 9 p.m. along with the super stock and super modified classes of the mud bog at the grandstand. The grand feature parade will line up beginning at 3 p.m. on Dan’s Run Road. Members of the Mountain Amateur Radio Cub (MARC) will participate in the National Amateur Radio Field Day event June 26-27 at the old LaVale Swim Club parking lot and Lion’s Pavilion located at 599 Georges Creek Blvd. ARRL Field Day is the single most popular on-the-air event held annually in the US and Canada. On the fourth weekend of June of each year, thousands of radio amateurs gather with their clubs, groups or simply with friends to operate from remote locations. Cumberland Gas Prices Holding Steady
Maryland gas price averages increased overnight, as did the national average, after little movement over the last few days. Drivers are likely to see minimal fluctuations in prices through the weekend, however, increasing crude prices, while gas demand remains high, are likely to push pump prices higher ahead of the Independence Day holiday weekend. Today’s national gas price average is $3.08, up a penny from one week ago, five cents higher than one month ago and 91 cents more than one year ago. Local Catholic Churches Lift COVID Restrictions
The Catholic churches of Allegany and Garrett counties will resume full-capacity worship beginning with this weekend’s services. In a press release, the pastors of Divine Mercy Parish in Frostburg, Our Lady of the Mountains in Cumberland and St. Peter the Apostle in Oakland announced that, a year after reopening services with limited capacity, many COVID-19-related restrictions will be lifted for this weekend’s masses and all future ones.
2.6-magnitude earthquake felt in Maryland, centered near Woodlawn
A small earthquake shook the Baltimore area on Friday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake, with a preliminary magnitude of 2.6, happened around 3:40 p.m., according to Paul Caruso, a geophysicist at the USGS National Earthquake Information Center. It was centered in Woodlawn, just west of Baltimore, and was about 1.5 miles deep. People in the Baltimore area tweeted about feeling the temblor, but it wasn't yet clear if it caused any damage. State Superintendent discusses lessons learned during the pandemic
Maryland State Superintendent Karen Salmon is retiring from her position by the end of June, but she spoke with WBAL Friday morning to discuss her journey, especially during the past year with a global pandemic.
