The Allegany County Board of Education this week acknowledged nearly 60 retirees from the school system who ranged in periods of service from 12 to 43 years, and whose positions included teachers and bus drivers. It was a much larger number than usual for those electing to retire, and Board vice-president Robert Farrell said it was concerning to see the system losing so much experience. ACPS Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Jeff Blank, has announced the appointment of two new principals for the upcoming school year. Dr. Laura Holland has been appointed as the new principal at Mt. On Wednesday, June 9th, 2021, The Cumberland City Police served a Criminal Summons on Chad Edward Izat, 36, of Cumberland MD. The summons was in reference to an incident which occurred on January 14th, 2021, in the area of Queen City Dr. During this incident, an Officer observed Izat allegedly purchasing suspected CDS. When the Officer attempted to stop and contact Izat, he began to flee the area on foot while being observed throwing the CDS items that he had taken from inside his pockets. An aggravated assault charge was dropped on Wednesday against a Schellsburg-area man accused of shooting a Wisconsin civil rights activist last summer during a Black Lives Matter march through Bedford County. The judge also dismissed a charge of simple assault against Terry Myers, 51, following a five-hour preliminary hearing.. District Attorney Lesley Childers-Potts withdrew a charge of criminal mischief. The judge then bound over charges of reckless endangerment and harassment. UPDATE: Service has been restored. A Potomac Edison official said the problem was caused when a tree fell on a main power line. Electrical service is being restored in the Westernport area following what was described as a widespread outage in the region overnight. The cause of the problem has not been determined. There's no estimated to time for when service will be fully restored.

The Allegany County Public School System will not hold back the large number of students who failed classes this year, in favor of giving them additional time and customized instruction plans to make up gaps in their learning created by a once-in-a-century pandemic.
