State Superintendent Visits Western Maryland Schools

Maryland State Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Karen Salmon visited two Allegany County Public Schools while in Western Maryland Thursday. Her first stop was at Braddock Middle School, where she was greeted with a song by members of the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade chorus, followed by a tour of several classrooms led by principal, Dr. Molly Stewart. Commissioners President: Hogan Impressed by County’s Efforts to Resume In-Person learning

COVID Outbreak at Frankfort High School

Mineral County health and school officials reported a classroom outbreak of two cases at Frankfort High School on Wednesday. An outbreak is defined as two or more cases in a 14-day period among staff or students in a single classroom, according to a news release. Contact tracing and the process of notifying individuals who should quarantine was reportedly underway. Superintendent Troy Ravenscroft reported 12 active student cases and no staff cases Wednesday across the school system. Ninety-four students were quarantined, along with one staff member. Mountain Ridge Class to Premiere documentary on the Luke Mill

The Mountain Ridge High School Historical Research Methods class will hold the premiere of their 10th documentary on Thursday, May 27, 2021, at 8:30 p.m. in the school's stadium with a rain date of Friday, May 28, 2021. This year's installment, entitled "The Luke Mill: More than Paper", showcases the impact of the Luke Paper Mill on the people of the tri-county area. Capacity restrictions to be lifted at Oriole Park June 1

If you want to go to an Orioles home game, you’re in luck. Oriole Park will no longer operate under capacity restrictions beginning June 1. Tickets for remaining home games from June through September go on sale Wednesday, May 26, at 12 p.m. est. There will be a two-hour online presale Wednesday, May 26, at 10 a.m., for fans subscribed to the Orioles digital newsletter. High School Spring State Championships to Return

The MPSSAA Board of Control met on Wednesday, May 19, 2021, with Spring State Championships on the agenda. Sport tournament directors presented plans for the administration of spring state championships between June 5 – 19, 2021. The Board of Control overwhelmingly voted in favor of the proposal, returning spring state championships to Maryland for the first time since May 2019. The MPSSAA plans included culminating events on June 18th and 19th for high school baseball, softball, tennis, and track and field. UPDATE: Tractor Trailer Fire Scene Cleared

A tractor trailer fire on Interstate 68 East near Maryland Avenue had the two right lanes closed for more than an hour this morning. Traffic was backed up. Crews have since cleared the scene.

Police Serve Bench Warrants

On May 19, 2021, the Cumberland City Police served a Bench Warrant on Jessica Michels, age 34 of Cumberland, Maryland.  The Warrant charged Michels with contempt of court for failing to appear in District Court on May 18, 2021, on the charges of 2 counts of stalking and 2 counts of telephone misuse.  Michels was later taken to District Court for her Initial Appearance and released on a $5000 unsecured bond.   On May 19, 2021, the Cumberland City Police served a Bench Warrant on David Mullen, age 56 of Cumberland, Maryland.  The Warrant charged Mullen with contempt of court…

Update: Route 220 in Rawlings Reopened Following Accident; One Person Injured

UPDATE: Route 220 is currently open and traffic is clear in the area. Police say a vehicle struck a utility pole. The driver was transported from the scene by ambulance with unspecified injuries. The cause of the incident is under investigation. ————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————- At approximately 5:55 a.m., a vehicle accident was reported on Route 220 in Rawlings in the area of Summerfield Lane. Route 220 is closed at this time in the area of the accident while crews respond and clear the scene. There are currently no reports on injuries at the scene.
