Cumberland To Receive Federal Grant For More Police
U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen and Congressmen Anthony G. Brown and David Trone (all D-Md.) today announced $3 million in federal funding to hire 24 law enforcement professionals in Prince George’s and Allegany Counties through the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Hiring Program. This program seeks to reduce crime and advance public safety through community policing by providing direct funding for the hiring of career law enforcement officers, increasing their community policing capacity, and improving crime prevention efforts. School Maintenance and Upgrades Discussed with Commissioners
The Allegany County Commissioners have approved the board of education’s FY 2023 Capital Improvement Program- a list that comes with a total price tag exceeding $5 million. Only ten percent of that is requested from the county- with the state covering the bulk of the cost coming from the state. The projects include: an elevator for Braddock Middle School; door and window replacement at Beall Elementary; electrical service upgrades at Washington Middle and Braddock; roof replacement at Northeast Elementary; air handler replacement at Cash Valley Elementary; and a chiller replacement at Beall. Times-News Building Possible Development Site
Centrally located at the corner of Baltimore and Mechanic streets- the Cumberland Times News building and adjacent parking lot is viewed as an ideal spot for future development. It is a site that the Cumberland Economic Development Corporation has had on its radar- although no recent proposals have been discussed publicly. ACPS Reports Schools Without COVID Outbreak
Allegany County Public Schools report that there were no schools identified with a school wide COVID-19 outbreak last week. Parkside Elementary had two cohorts that qualifed as a cohort outbreak. 36 students and three staffers tested positive last week, while 75 students and one staff member were involved in quarantine due to close contact.
Frostburg SGA President Issues Statement on Twitter Harassment
Saturday, the young woman who was racially harassed via anonymous Twitter accounts as she ran for President of the Frostburg State University Student Government Association issued a statement on her Facebook page. Ariyana Monee says she believed Cassie Conklin, who has been accused of operating the harasing accounts, was a supporter who supplied personal and financial support as the harassment was taking place. Monee also said she reached out for help from the university and police and received none. Potomac Edison has scheduled a maintenance outage in the Keyser and Fort Ashby areas on Monday, from 9:00 AM until noon. Although weather is not anticipated to be a problem, a backup date has been set for Tuesday during the same time frame. Frostburg Man Jailed For Missing Court Date
Early Sunday, The Cumberland Police Department served an Arrest Warrant on Robert Brian Winner of Frostburg, MD. The arrest warrant stemmed from Winner failing to appear in Circuit Court on September 22, 2021 for an initial charge of Unlawful taking of a Motor Vehicle. Winner was served with the Arrest Warrant and ordered by the Court to be held without bond. Winner was transported to the Allegany County Detention Center where he will be held until his appearance before a Circuit Court Judge.
