Cumberland Mayor & Council to Meet Tuesday

The Mayor and City Council of Cumberland will hold a public work session Tuesday evening, April 20, 2021, beginning at 5:45 p.m. via video conference.    A public meeting will follow beginning at 6:15 p.m. and will also be held via video conference.

Deputies Slate Drug Take Back Event

On April 24, 2021, the Allegany County Sheriff's Office will be collecting unused or expired prescription medication for safe disposal at the Bowling Green Volunteer Fire Department located on McMullen Highway in Cumberland.  Deputies will be on site at the Fire Hall from 12:30 PM to 3:30 PM.  Simply pull up to the front of the parking lot where the Sheriff's Deputies patrol vehicles are parked and a Deputy will greet you inside your vehicle.  

FSU faculty, staff members offered buyouts

The Cumberland Times News reports the University System of Maryland Board of Regents accepted a proposal Friday that would allow Frostburg State University to extend two voluntary separation plans to faculty and staff who qualify for them. The plans would look to incentivize eligible employees to “separate from employment with the university.” As the plan is proposed, faculty members at least 57 or older on or before June 30, who have an age plus years of state service equal or greater than 80, and staff members at least 60 or older on or before June 30, who have an age…

Allegany County Emergency Services reported a working house fire just after 5 a.m Saturday on Carscadaen Road in the Eckhart area. The house, which was reportedly abandoned, was located just off Hoffman Hollow Road

Hagerstown Man with Gun Arrested near Braddock Middle School

Friday afternoon at approximately 3:00 PM the Cumberland City Police Department were dispatched to the 900 block of Holland Street for a disturbance. Upon arrival officers spoke to the victim who advised the suspect was carrying a handgun. The suspect left the area and a broadcast of their description was provided. The suspect was located in the 400 block of Columbia Street. A high-risk stop was conducted and a loaded handgun was recovered from Calvin Xavier Salgado. Governor Hogan backs off from goal for Maryland to approach normalcy by Memorial Day

WBAL reports Gov. Larry Hogan conceded Friday that the pause in the use of Johnson & Johnson's COVID-19 vaccine makes his earlier prediction that Maryland would reapproach normalcy by Memorial Day grow hazier by the day. "We are not getting the vaccines that they promised us… so I think it's going to be very difficult not to push that back," Hogan said, speaking after a tour of a new mass-vaccination site in Annapolis. Prices at the Pump Falling in Cumberland

Local drivers saw another week of slight drops in prices at the pump this week. Frederick saw the biggest decrease of three cents, while Annapolis and Hagerstown saw prices dip two cents week over week.  The majority of the state saw a one cent drop, as the national average remained flat. According to new data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), total domestic gasoline stocks increased last week, helping to minimize pump price increases as demand for gasoline increased. 49 New COVID Cases in Allegany County

The Allegany County Health Department reports that 20,791 Allegany County residents have received their first dose of a two-dose vaccine against COVID-19 (29.5% of the population), with 13,314 of those individuals now fully vaccinated with their second dose (18.9 % of the population).  Additionally, 2,109 Allegany County residents have received the single dose Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) vaccine (3.0 %).   By comparison, the state reported that 36.7% of all Marylanders had received their first dose of a two-dose vaccine, with 22.4% having had both doses and an additional 3.0% vaccinated with the single dose vaccine.   Allegany County COVID-19…

Health Department Warns of COVID-19 Phone Scam

The Allegany County Health Department has become aware of a phone scam in which the caller states that they are calling regarding COVID-19 vaccination and then proceeds to ask for a social security number.   The health department has been making calls to schedule vaccination appointments, but we will never ask for your social security number.  If you receive a call about COVID vaccination and are asked for your social security number, please report it to local law enforcement.

10 Students, 1 Staff Member with Cases of COVID reported by ACPS

For the week of April 12-16, 2021, ACPS reports 1 case of COVID-19 in a staff member and 10 cases of COVID-19 in students.  These individuals will complete the required isolation period before returning to their school buildings. Close contacts at school were not identified in the staff case, but were identified in five of the student cases. Those identified close contacts will complete a ten-day quarantine before returning to the school building. Parents were notified through the ACPS Blackboard notification system if there was a positive case in their child's school building.    ACPS had 3 staff members who were reported as…
