Making a surprise appearance at Heritage days on Saturday Western Maryland scenic railroads steam engine 1309 cross the bridge from West Virginia into Maryland for its first time. With its fresh coat of paint engine 1309 was on static display for visitors Saturday. During WCBCs live broadcast of the event Wesley Hines executive director of the scenic railroad spoke about the upcoming Federal inspection and plans for 1309 to pull the Polar Express this holiday season.
Heritage Days Festivities pause to remember September 11th
Heritage day's festivities took a pause Saturday morning to honor those lives lost and the heroes marking the 20th anniversary of the September 11th. Church bells rang across Cumberland followed by a 21 gun salute and taps from Washington st. Jonathan Dayton of Allegany/Garrett county's fire rescue association presented remarks focused on the first responders who ran to help those in need.
COVID Cases Cause Keyser Primary and Keyser Middle School to Go Remote Learning on Monday
Mineral County Schools Superintendent Troy Ravenscroft posted the following message on his Facebook page Sunday afternoon. This message is for families of Keyser Primary School and Keyser Middle School: KPS and KMS will be remote learning tomorrow, September 13th due to the additional Covid cases and quarantines impacting these schools, which we received today. Tomorrow, we will evaluate the overall impact on each school and determine if a longer period of remote learning is needed. We will provide updates tomorrow, no later than 5pm. Staff will report normally.

City Woman Held After Alleged Knife Threats
On September 11th, 2021, The Cumberland City Police responded to a Bellevue Street residence for the report of an assault involving a knife. Upon arrival, Officers contacted multiple victims and witnesses to the incident. Officers learned that a disturbance began inside the residence between two subjects, including Ashley Regina Kline, 34, of Cumberland MD. During the argument, it was reported that Kline armed herself with a knife and began to chase other subjects inside the home, threatening to cause them bodily harm. DNR Police Arrest Pair In Alcohol Related Cases
A Frostburg man was arrested on Aug. 1 for impaired driving after crashing his motorcycle into a bush at Rocky Gap State Park in Allegany County. Police say they were flagged by park staff and notified of a motorcycle swerving off the road on Lakeshore Drive near the park’s entrance. Police say the driver, Harry Skidmore III, 31, showed signs of alcohol impairment, and was given a field sobriety test. The department invites all junior license holders, apprentice license holders, and lapsed hunters to apply to participate in this year’s stocked pheasant hunts and/or apply for the mentored pheasant hunt event. Derrick Evans pleads not guilty to federal felony in Jan. 6 case
Lawyers have agreed that more time is necessary to pursue plea negotiations with former West Virginia Delegate Derrick Evans. During a brief status hearing Friday, U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth of the District of Columbia agreed to put off further courtroom discussion of the case against Evans until 1 p.m. Nov. 10. Evans, who resigned his seat in the state Legislature prior to actually serving, faces several charges from surging into the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 while Congress was certifying Electoral College votes. 9/11 Cemmoration Ceremonies
There will be two separate 9/11 Commemoration Ceremonies Saturday in downtown Cumberland. First up is a ceremony at the Public Safety Building at 8:30. At 9:45, on the Heritage Day’s stage in front of the Washington Street Library, a second ceremony will be held featuring Jonathan Dayton, from the volunteer fire and rescue association of Garrett and Allegany… Invocation by Jim Kasekamp, Chaplin for Cumberland Fire Department; recognition of the moment the South Tower collapsed with the ringing of Cumberland’s church bells, a 21 gun salute and playing of taps. WCBC will broadcast the 9:45 ceremony live.
Heritage Days
Heritage Days returns to Cumberland this weekend with activities and entertainment planned throughout the city center. Canceled last year due to COVID-19 concerns, the annual street festival will take place Saturday and Sunday and feature food and crafts vendors, rides and games for the kids, live music and reenactors, including George Washington. The event, free and open to families and children, takes place on the downtown pedestrian mall and Washington Street.
