On Wednesday, September 1st, 2021 the Cumberland Police Department responded to an Ali Ghan Road business for the report of an assault. When officers arrived, they contacted a male victim who advised he had been assaulted by another male, identified as Jason Vance Griffin. The victim was slightly injured but a diagnostic computer valued at approximately $10,000 was damaged as the result of Griffin assaulting him. Griffin was arrested and charged with assault and malicious destruction of property. On Tuesday at approximately 11:38 am, a male subject walked into VanMeter’s Grocery in Flintstone, Maryland, brandishing a firearm and demanding cash. He attempted to open the cash register himself but was unsuccessful. The suspect fled on foot and ran north towards the interstate and was spotted getting into a silver or gray sedan by a witness. He then reportedly drove past the store traveling south on Murley's Branch Road. Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot is asking the state’s new superintendent of schools to implement a vaccination mandate for teachers and staff. Franchot’s comments come just days after Superintendent Mohammed Choudhury said he expects no public-school building in the state will close this academic year because of COVID-19. Choudhury said he believes local school systems have enough safety protocols in place to keep schools from having to close. Efforts to open a skateboard park in Cumberland are continuing- but to date there is still no agreement on a possible location. Following months of meetings between city officials and a small citizens group in support of a city skatepark- the Cumberland Mayor and City Council voted last month to officially support the concept. Options that have been discussed include Cumberland Street, Canal Place and Constitution Park- with the citizens group strongly pushing for a downtown Cumberland site. National Weather Service alerts involving high water were broadcast throughout most of the afternoon via instant Emergency Broadcast Alerts and WCBC News Special Reports.
