Allegany school board members to discuss resumption of sports during Monday session

The Allegany Board of Education has scheduled a special meeting Monday afternoon to discuss a plan for the return of fall sports. Maryland Governor Larry Hogan and State Superintendent Karen Salmon announced last week that school systems are now permitted to begin sports practice sessions on October 7th and games can be schedule starting on October 27th.  Although Allegany County is just one of 11 county school systems that had already announced a fall sports plan, the governor’s announcement still came as somewhat of a shock, according to Allegany County Board of Education member Robert Farrell…

Morriss discusses reasons for improving regional real estate market

The number of houses on the market in Cumberland and Allegany County has been shrinking fairly dramatically this year, and while COVID has had an impact on the real estate market, local officials believe there are more encouraging reasons for the trend. Cumberland Mayor Ray Morriss, during an appearance on WCBC’s  “Dave Norman Show” said that Cumberland and Western Maryland offer an attractive living environment with more natural resources and outdoor space than many of the larger cities.

County sets timetable for construction of new Berkeley Springs Instruments facility

The Allegany County Commissioners have paved the way for a Cumberland technologies company to locates its operations in Frostburg. A $3.5 million bid from Lashley Construction to build a technology facility in the Frostburg Industrial Park was approved by county officials at the regular public meeting.  Berkeley Springs Instruments is currently located at Uhl Highway. The company makes scientific sensors which monitor the integrity of pipelines and industrial tanks in real time. Parrott: Following shooting of Louisville police officers, Trone mostly silent

Last week two officers were shot in Louisville, Kentucky, after the grand jury indicated they would not be seeking criminal charges against two of the three police officers connected with death of Breonna Taylor.  Neil Parrott, the Republican challenger in Maryland’s Sixth District Congressional race, has criticized incumbent David Trone, saying the Democratic representative has largely remained silent on this subject of domestic terrorism. UPMC confirms Snow Ball fundraiser will be postponed

The Western Maryland Health System Auxiliary’s largest annual fundraiser- the Snow Ball- is the latest major event to be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. While it hasn’t been cancelled, the 65th annual Snow Ball will be delayed by a few months. Described by organizers as an evening of elegance and the area’s premier black tie gala, the Snow Ball is traditionally held each January at the Cumberland Country Club. Amber Alert Suspect Under Arrest

MSP MEDIA RELEASE: A kidnapping suspect who allegedly assaulted his girlfriend and drove off with her infant in Garrett County this morning, prompting an Amber Alert, is under arrest in Pennsylvania after the child was recovered unharmed. Keith Kyle, 35, of Meyersdale, PA, is currently being held in Pennsylvania as a fugitive from Maryland. An arrest warrant has been obtained in Maryland charging him with kidnapping, home invasion and assault. Shortly after 10:00 a.m. today, Maryland State Police troopers from the McHenry Barrack responded to a restaurant parking lot in Grantsville, Md., for the report of an assault. Troopers learned…

City Man Jailed After Alleged Assault

On Saturday, Cumberland Police served an arrest warrant on Hunter Ashton Ware for 1st and 2nd degree assault. The warrant was issued by District Court in reference to an incident that occurred at a Maryland Avenue residence in the early morning hours where Ware is alleged to have thrown a female victim down the stairs fracturing her arm. Ware was taken before the District Court Commissioner and was held without bond until he can be seen by a District Court Judge.   Hunter Ashton Ware, age; 26, Cumberland, Maryland.

Rawlings Man Held for Violation of Probation

Cumberland Police served a Circuit Court warrant on Jason Evers George Saturday for violating the conditions of his probation ordered by the court. The 45 year old George was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center held without bond until he can be seen a Circuit Court Judge.      

Burglary Complaint Leads to Disorderly Charge

On Saturday, Cumberland Police responded to the area of East Offutt Street for the report of a man that may have been trying to break into a business. When officers arrived in the area, they observed the male in question know to them as 44 year old Jason Apollo Crabtree. Upon contacting Crabtree, he became uncooperative and started causing a commotion disturbing others in the area. Crabtree was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. He was issued a criminal citation and was released pending trial at District Court.   Jason Apollo Crabtree, age; 44, Cumberland, Maryland.

Naves Crossroad Accident Injured Two

The Joint Communications Center of Allegany County dispatched police, fire, EMS and Trooper 5 to Naves Crossroads Saturday morning for a motor vehicle collision. The mishap occurred at about 10:25 AM and involved a head on collision, with entrapment, according to Lieutenant Todd Bowman of Emergency Services. One of those trapped was flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown for treatment. The injured parties are said to be not from this area.  The Allegany County Sheriff's Office is investigating.
