Allegany High School Student Selected to Participate in Global Youth Conference
Genevieve Batman, junior at Allegany High School, was recently selected to participate in a global youth conference called YOUNGA as a U.S. youth delegate. YOUNGA is in its first year and is a companion to the United Nations General Assembly. Genevieve will join 1,500 youth and young adults from around the world, 30 of which will represent the United States at this conference. YOUNGA’s youth mastermind sessions will be held September 28-29, 2020, followed by four weeks of specialize sessions with corresponding leadership training and then culminating with the Global Spectacular October 23-25, 2020. Police Serve Arrest Warrants
On Monday, September 28, 2020, the Cumberland City Police served an Arrest Warrant on Maxwell Redman, age 58 of Cumberland, Maryland. The Warrant stemmed from a September 25, 2020 incident that occurred in the 200 block of Columbia Street. During that incident, officers were dispatched to Columbia Street for a reported assault. While conducting their investigation, they learned that the victim had been assaulted with a blunt object and sustained serious injuries. Following Allegany BOE vote, athletics directors will meet Wednesday
The Allegany County Board of Education voted unanimously Monday to opt for a sports calendar which will feature a return to practice in two weeks, with opening games set for about a month from now. Tracy Leonard is the Supervisor of Athletics for ACPS… WCBC News has learned that Allegany County contests are expected to features games within the county, and with schools from Garrett and Washington Counties. Cumberland Police Arrest Wanted Man
On 09/28/2020 officers with the Cumberland Police Department arrested Maxwell Redman without incident on an active arrest warrant. He is currently awaiting his initial appearance before a District Court Commissioner.
Virginia Avenue Underpass Work Scheduled
The City of Cumberland Engineering Department would like to notify the public on the behalf of CSX Transportation that the Virginia Avenue underpass will be reduced to one lane between 9am-3pm from Tuesday, September 29, 2020, through next Friday, October 9, 2020. CSX will be making repairs to the concrete sidewalk and handrails within the underpass. This schedule may change due to weather conditions. Allegany County COVID: 15 New Cases, One Death
The Allegany County Health Department reports one COVID-19-related death – a community member in his 70s. Fifteen new cases of COVID-19 have also been identified in Allegany County, including three females in their teens, three females and six males in their 20s, a female in her 30s, and two females in their 50s. None of the new cases have required hospitalization. The cumulative case count for Allegany County now stands at 479.

Maryland U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen took his criticism of Supreme Court nominee Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the next level on Monday, telling WBAL Radio he believes Barrett's judicial record and writings put her "far out of the judicial mainstream." Specifically, he cited Barrett's past statements regarding abortion and the Affordable Care Act. BREAKING: ACPS Approves October Start For Athletics
The Allegany County Board of Educatoin Monday afternoon approved returning to interscholastic athletics under a calendar which would include a return to practice on October 7, and a return to competition the week of October 27. The motion was made by Dr. David Bohn, and seconded by Deb Frank. Board members said they will continue working dilligently to get students back to the classroom as soon as possible, noting there would be criticism that officials were putting athletics ahead of academics.
