Busy Friday for City Police

On Friday,  the Cumberland Police Department served a bench warrant on Kara Inez Miller.  The warrant was issued by District Court for failing to appear for trial on September 10th, 2020 for theft charges.  She was taken before the District Court Commissioner and was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center held on a $1,000 bond. Friday night motorcycle accident in Hancock

 At at 10:34 PM Fridaytroopers from the Hagerstown Barrack responded to W/B I-70 at the Ramp for Rt. 522 Hancock MD for a single vehicle collision.  Investigation revealed a 1994 Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by John Hafferman 66, of Denton MD traveled off the roadway and struck a concrete jersey wall.  M/T Thompson is the lead investigator.  The cause of the collision is under investigation.  The driver was transported to Shock Trauma by Maryland State Police Aviation Trooper 5.  The Rt. 522 Ramp was shutdown temporary for investigation. 

FSU to conduct second round of universal COVID testing

The Cumberland Times News reports that inn following University System of Maryland guidance, Frostburg State University will conduct a second round of universal testing on faculty, staff and students Sept. 21-23 in the Cordts PE Center. People already tested as part of the university's surveillance testing program will also be tested again. Program for extra $300 payments for Marylanders left unemployed during pandemic now in effect

A program to help Maryland residents left unemployed because of the coronavirus crisis began Friday. The Lost Wages Assistance program is launching ahead of schedule after Maryland applied for and was approved to receive a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency in August. An executive order signed by President Donald Trump on Aug. 8 allows FEMA to spend up to $44 billion from its Disaster Relief Fund to provide lost wages assistance to states. It gives an extra $300 a week in unemployment benefits to residents who lost wages because of the pandemic, on top of a regular $100 payment…

Coronavirus positivity rates creeping up in Maryland, Virginia

September has brought mixed results so far when it comes to how the region is handling the COVID-19 pandemic. In Maryland, the seven-day positivity rate in coronavirus testing has been inching up. According to state health officials, the state has a 3.7% positivity rate, up slightly from 3.6% a month ago. Virginia health officials reported a 6.4% positivity rate in Northern Virginia, up from 5.6% a month ago. It’s a different story in D.C., where the positivity rate has been dropping over the past month, going from 3.3% to 2.6%.

Six new COVID-19 cases in Allegany County brings total to 417

The Allegany County Health Department reports six new cases of COVID-19 in Allegany County including a male in his teens, a female in her 20s, a female in her 40s, a male and female in their 50s, and a male in his 70s.  None of the new cases have required hospitalization.  This brings the cumulative number of cases in Allegany County to 417.  To date, 16,518 Allegany County residents have been tested for COVID-19.  Of those, 417 have tested positive and 16,101 have tested negative. Allegany County Public Schools plans to return to extracurricular activities as the school system safely returns students to small group in-person learning.  As part of the guidance from the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), ACPS must consult and collaborate with the Maryland Public Schools Secondary Athletic Association (MPSSAA) on any plans to return to play and/or practice. Social gatherings banned in areas of Morgantown connected to WVU campus

Parties and similar social gatherings have been banned in areas of Morgantown covering the West Virginia University main campus and neighborhoods where university students typically live. According to an order signed by Interim-City Manager Emily Muzzarelli on Thursday, parties at residential units, yards or parking lots in certain neighborhoods are prohibited. The restrictions do not apply to deliveries, maintenance, repairs or other regular business.  The order comes as COVID-19 cases continue to rise in Monongalia County, mostly generated by cases among WVU students.
