ACPS Thanksgiving Vacation Starts Wednesday

Allegany County Public Schools will be dismissing three hours early this Wednesday, November 26th. Schools will be closed Thursday, Friday, and Monday for Thanksgiving break.  Classes will resume on Tuesday, December 2nd. 

Maryland Medicare Recipients Can Enroll in Special Needs Plans

Marylanders on Medicare and Medicaid can enroll for a Dual Eligible Special Needs Plan through December 17th to coordinate benefits the two programs provide.  The plans, called D-SNPs, are available to people based on certain disabilities and income or health issues.  Marian Cabanillas with UnitedHealthcare says  D-SNPs offer many services that contribute to a person’s overall quality of life…     “You may be able to get vision coverage, hearing coverage, and dental care. So that might include things like checkups or dental cleanings, things of that nature, which are really important to stay healthy.”

Salvation Army Needs Volunteers For Kettles

Silver bells are ringing across the region as the Salvation Army conducts its annual Red Kettle campaign.  Locally, volunteers are still needed to work at collection sites until Christmas Eve.  Lieutenant Risa Robinson of the Cumberland Salvation Army tells    WCBC that about 1500 hours still need to be covered. Groups of two to four people can volunteer to ring bells for at least two hours. Lt. Bench Warrant Served

On Monday, November 24th, 2025, officers with the Cumberland Police Department responded to the area of Interstate 68 near Maryland Ave for the report of a male subject exposing himself to passersby. Upon arrival, officers observed the male clearly exposing his buttocks near the roadway. The subject was identified as John Robert Scott Jr, 50, of Cumberland MD. It was at that time, it was learned that Scott had an active warrant for his arrest in Washington County Maryland for failing to appear in Circuit Court on a previous theft charge. Mechanic Street Assault, Resisting Arrest, Intoxicated Public Disturbance Arrest

On Monday, November 24th, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department responded to a S. Mechanic St business for the report of a male subject who was refusing to pay his bill. When confronted by staff, the male began to assault staff inside the business. When officers arrived on scene, the male was found passed out on the floor. West Virginia Funds Statewide Crime Victim Programs

Governor Patrick Morrisey announced that he has awarded $16.3 million dollars in West Virginia Victims of Crime Act grants to 83 projects across the state. At a press conference in Parkersburg, the governor said the funds would support assistance to victims as they move through the criminal justice system to make sure they have access to the help they need…     “Money for counseling, money for forensic interviews, money for crisis intervention, for legal advocacy, emergency shelter, transportation. AAA Projecting Record Travel This Week

Triple-A Mid Atlantic is projecting nearly 82 million Americans will hit the road for Thanksgiving travel this year. City Makes Proclamation for Small Business Saturday

The Cumberland Mayor and City Council read out a special proclamation at their last meeting designating Saturday November 29th as Small Business Saturday in the City of Cumberland. Small Business Saturday occurs annually on the Saturday following Thanksgiving, kicking off the busiest season for independently owned businesses who employ local residents…     “According to the United States Chamber of Commerce, small businesses employ nearly half of the entire American workforce and represent 46.8% of America’s GDP.  12.9 million jobs were created by small businesses between 1996 and 2021.”
