New Creek VFD Awarded Grant
Mineral County legislators including Delegates Rick Hillenbrand and Gary Howell, along with West Virginia Senate President Randy Smith were on hand at the New Creek Volunteer Fire House Thursday evening to present a Local Economic Development Assistance Grant. The money will be used to purchase an extraction washing machine that uses special detergents to remove potentially hazardous contaminants from fire fighting gear. The grant was for $4,600.
Columbia Street Disorderly Conduct arrest
On Saturday, February 1, 2025 at approximately 2:38 PM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a residence in the 400 block of Columbia Street for a disturbance. Police contacted the parties involved who were currently arguing. One of the parties reported that Cassandra Thompson had been causing a disturbance and damaging a truck. During the investigation, Thompson attempted to walk away after being told that she was not free to leave. Thompson continued to cause a disturbance and refused to listen to officers. The City of Cumberland Department of Community Development will return to the Lower Level of City Hall at 57 N. Liberty Street beginning January 31, 2025. All phone numbers will remain the same and connected. The City of Cumberland Community Development Block Grant program, with Senior Community Development Specialist Lee Borror, will also return to City Hall at this time. I-68 Accident Snarls Traffic Friday Night
A tractor trailer rollover Friday night closed I 68 eastbound for hours. The accident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. at mile marker 42 across from the Seton Drive exit. Several fire companies and rescue personnel responded to the scene.

City Police Report
On January 30, 2025 at approximately 10:51 AM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the 100 block of Bedford Street for a disturbance. Police contacted the parties involved and identified one subject as Javas Bohrer. During the investigation, Bohrer was found to be in possession of suspected drug paraphernalia. Dr. Ronald H. Nowaczyk, Former FSU President, Passes Away At 74
On Friday, Jan. 31, the fifteenth president of Frostburg State University, Dr. Ronald H. Nowaczyk passed away surrounded by family after a courageous battle with cancer. Earlier this month in a message to campus, Nowaczyk announced that he was stepping down as president of FSU to focus on his health issues and spend more time with his wife and son. Nowaczyk brought with him more than 40 years of higher education experience to Frostburg. Samaritan’s Purse
Across the U.S., the Samaritan’s Purse project collected 10.5 million shoebox gifts in 2024. Combined with those collected from other countries, the ministry sends nearly 12 million shoebox gifts to children worldwide. Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child has collected and delivered more than 232 million gift-filled shoeboxes to children in more than 170 countries and territories. Even after the Christmas season, people can fill a shoebox any time of the year online at samaritanspurse.org.
Bench Warrants Served
On Thursday, January 30th, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department arrested Gary Randall Trenter II, 37, of Cumberland MD. Trenter was arrested on an active Bench Warrant issued by the Allegany County Circuit Court on January 29th, 2025. The warrant alleges Trenter violated the terms and conditions of probation that had been placed upon him due to a previous conviction on charges of 4th degree burglary. He was taken before a District Court Commissioner for an Initial Appearance where he was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center. He is currently being held without bond. One of the executive orders signed by President Donald Trump halts the further approvals of funding for offshore wind projects across the country. Currently, a wind farm of 114 turbines is in preliminary construction off the coast of Ocean City.
