Rotary Club of Cumberland accepting allocation

The Rotary Club of Cumberland will accept allocation requests now until July 31, 2025 that help support local organizations and programs. Cumberland Rotarians raise funds through the collection of dues and through annual fundraising efforts. In 2024-2025, Rotary provided allocations totaling $8,200 to a variety of organizations. Flag Day

Today is Flag Day in the United States.  Flag Day officially began in the U.S. in 1916 under President Woodrow Wilson.  The day was officially recognized by Congress in 1949.  The Frostburg Elks will hold a ceremony this evening at 6 p.m.

Two Openings on Library Board

In the past appointments to the Allegany County Library Board were routine and without fanfare.  With controversy swirling over library decision-making that process is garnering plenty of attention this summer.  There will be two vacancies on the board and the Allegany County Commissioners indicated at their Thursday meeting that they will take a much more active role in the process this year.

Mineral County Fair Begins Next Week

The Mineral County Fair begins Tuesday in Fort Ashby.  The 75th annual event is sponsored by the Fort Ashby Volunteer Fire Company.

City Police Report for Saturday

  **ADULT ARREST** On Friday, June 13th, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department arrested Adrienne Marcel Thomas, 53, of Cumberland, MD. Thomas was arrested on an active Bench Warrant issued by the Allegany County District Court on October 22nd, 2024. On that date, it is alleged that Thomas failed to appear in District Court for a previous charge of CDS possession, not marijuana. Thomas was taken before a District Court Commissioner for an Initial Appearance, where she was released on her own recognizance. Lane Closures Coming for Bay Bridge

The Maryland Transportation Authority has announced several lane closures are in store next week for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.  The lane closures will take place between June 15 and 21.  Officials said closures may change and times are depending on traffic volumes and other factors.

Two Killed in Train Collision in Pennsylvania

Two Somerset women were killed Thursday when their vehicle was hit by a train in Rockwood.  The accident occurred at 10:30 a.m. and investigators say crossing gates were functioning properly.  The deceased have been identified as Susan Spangler, 67, and Deloris Latshaw, 85.

Missing Person Located

Missing Neroli Mae has been located and she is safe.  The Cumberland Police Department would like to thank the public for its assistance in the matter.    

Mayor Encourages Neighbors Complete Surveys

The Enough Act, passed by the Governor Moore administration, is working to create opportunities in neighborhoods where more than 30% of children are living in poverty.  Cumberland Mayor Ray Morriss recently talked with WCBC about efforts of agencies including HRDC, the Local Management Board, and the Department of Social Services to get funding for programs in the South Penn and John Humbird areas. City Council is Holding Back-to-Back Closed Work Sessions

The Cumberland Mayor and City Council will be holding back-to-back Closed Work sessions on Monday, June 16.  Beginning at 4pm, the first meeting is to receive an update regarding the Messick Road business development site, and the second meeting is to discuss issues pertaining to an employee’s work performance and to consult with the City Solicitor regarding a proposal for the settlement of potential litigation.
