CSX Reports 2024 Earnings
CSX Corporation announced fourth quarter 2024 operating income of $1.1 billion dollars, down slightly from the same period last year. For the full year of 2024, operating income for CSX was $5.25 billion with a net income of $3.47 billion. CSX President Joe Hinrichs said the year had its challenges with major hurricanes and the loss of the Key Bridge but the company remained focused on deliverables and efficiency. Total revenue for the year was $14.5 billion dollars, a decrease of 1% over 2023.
Fire At Coolfont Resort
A late Sunday evening fire destroyed the main building at Coolfont Resort outside of Berkeley Springs. Morgan County firefighters, along with up to 12 other fire/rescue units responded at 9:30 Sunday evening to a commercial fire on the property. The resort’s Tree Top Restaurant and lodge were said to be a complete loss. The cause of the fire is being investigated. The resort has been in operation since the 1960s.
Commissioners Comment on Possible Library Closings
At the end of this past Thursday’s Allegany County Commissioner’s meeting, Commission President Dave Caporale took a moment to recognizing that there may be closures coming to branches of the Allegany County Library System. The library, along with other organizations in the county, faced a 10% budget cut for the current financial year, with no promise of future funding from the county or state because of their budget issues… “We understand the concerns regarding potential library closures in Allegany County. However, this decision to close any branch lies solely on the library board of trustees, not the commissioners….
Steelers President Says Team Unlikely to Keep Both Quarterbacks
At his end of year press conference Monday, Art Rooney II, president of the Pittsburgh Steelers, admitted it is unlikely that both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields will return to the team. Both are free agents. Rooney also stated his continued support of head coach Mike Tomlin.
High Wind Warning
A high wind warning has been issued for midnight until noon Tuesday. West winds of 25–35 mph are expected with possible gusts of 60 mph.
Affordable Solar Energy for Maryland Households
Maryland is striving to make power from the sun affordable to everyone through the Maryland Solar Access Program, a new initiative created by the 2024 Brighter Tomorrow Act, passed by the Maryland General Assembly last year. The new initiative provides up to $7,500 for an income-qualified household to install a solar energy system. The MEA is accepting applications on a first-come, first-served basis. This will enable recipients to pay less for their electric bills and helps Maryland combat climate change. More information is at energy.maryland.gov.

Mountain Ridge HS in HOLD Status This Morning
From Allegany County Public Schools: Today, January 27, 2025, Mountain Ridge High School was placed in a brief HOLD status due to a medical emergency. First Responders arrived on scene and provided medical service. School administrators gave the “All Clear” and the instructional day resumed as normal.
Adult Arrests By Cumberland Police
On Sunday, January 26th, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department arrested Shayna Cherry Fitzwater, 24, of Cumberland MD. Fitzwater was arrested on an active Parole Retake Warrant issued by the Maryland Parole Commission on January 14th, 2025. The warrant alleges Fitzwater violated the terms and conditions of parole that had been placed upon her that stemmed from a previous conviction on charges of escape and assault. She was taken before a District Court Commissioner for an Initial Appearance where she was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center. She is currently being held without bond.
