New designs were presented to the Cumberland Mayor and City Council recently to update the city seal. 2026 Midterms Wide Open
On the ballot in 2026 will be every statewide elected official in Maryland— Governor, Attorney General, Comptroller — as well as all 188 members of the Maryland General Assembly and the entire eight-member U.S. House delegation. While no candidate has come to the forefront to challenge Governor Wes Moore, rumors continue circulating that former Governor Larry Hogan may try to gain back the office. Child Welfare Reform In West Virginia
West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey announced a series of child welfare reforms aimed at beginning a new era of transparency for the state. Valentine Recalls Buehl’s Move to Tourism
Colleagues of the late Barb Buehl who passed away on Sunday are remembering her as a friend and big supporter of Allegany County. Former county commissioner Bill Valentine spoke with WCBC about how Buehl came into the job of tourism director as a contractor from her position at the Chamber of Commerce… “Chamber of Commerce was doing tourism. That just wasn’t really a good fit because there was too much competition between different businesses and all. So then, Barb was a private contractor with the county for tourism.”
Brawl at West Virginia High School Graduation
Graduation day at Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley, West Virginia ended in a brawl outside the auditorium. Video of the incident posted to social media showed adults engaging in a melee with people screaming, running, fists flying, and other individuals throwing bodies trying to break up the brawl. There’s no indication who started the altercation or what it could have been over. Ten or more people were involved.
Burglary at Point Stadium in Johnstown
Police are searching for a suspect after an individual broke into Point Stadium in Johnstown early Friday morning. The Johnstown Mill Rats baseball team reported that the individual broke into Point Stadium around 2 a.m. Friday morning and stole multiple items, including medical supplies used by the team. Point Stadium in downtown Johnstown opened in 1926 and hosts the AAABA baseball tournament. Allegany’s football team under Hall of Fame Coach Jack Gilmore defeated Johnstown High at the historic stadium in the late 1980s.
Spring Turkey Harvest Report
While the 2025 spring regular and junior turkey harvest in Maryland was slightly lower than the 2024 season total of 4,959, it remained well above the 10-year average of 4,350. Garrett County reported the highest harvest with 506 turkeys, followed by Charles County (445) and Washington County (406). Four counties set new harvest records: Cecil, St. Mary’s, Talbot, and Wicomico.
Bench Warrant Arrests
On Sunday, June 1st, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department arrested Dillon Edward Lowery, 32, of Cumberland, MD. Dillon was arrested on an active Bench Warrant issued by the Allegany County District Court on May 29th, 2025. The warrant alleges that Lowery had violated the terms and conditions of probation that had been placed upon him due to a previous conviction on CDS possession charges. Lowery was taken before a District Court Commissioner for an Initial Appearance, where he was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center. He is currently being held without bond.
