Bay Council Announces New Committee

Governors from three states bordering the Chesapeake Bay gathered at the Chesapeake Executive Council to determine a path forward in bay conservation. Maryland Governor Wes Moore, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, and Virginia’s Glenn Youngkin announced a new Agricultural Advisory Committee to revise the existing Watershed Agreement and make it more manageable.  Governor Moore says the effort goes beyond water quality…     “This is also about economics. Economics for our farmers, economics for our waterman and economics for our larger region. And the bay region generates more than five billion dollars in annual tourism related activities.”  

PACE Reception Takes Place This Week

The annual PACE Reception happens this week at the Westin Hotel in Annapolis. The yearly event highlights Allegany and Garrett Counties economic wish lists for state legislators. Garrett County Schools Virtual On Wednesday January 15

Due to the extreme cold and the Cold Weather Advisory issued for tomorrow, Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) will conduct a Virtual Learning Day on Wednesday, January 15, 2025. Schools will be closed for in-person learning. Upon their return, all schools will be prepared to meet student needs, as we recognize consecutive virtual learning days may be difficult for families, students, and staff.

Allegany County Public Schools 2 hour delay-Mountain Ridge District closed

All Mountain Ridge District schools are closed today. Allegany County Public Schools are on a two-hour delay today, Tuesday, January 14, 2025. All morning pre-kindergarten classes are canceled and there will be no breakfast served. All Mountain Ridge District schools are closed today  

Greene Street CDS, Disorderly Conduct, Disturb the Peace, and Resist Arrest

On Monday, January 13, 2025 at approximately 11:19 PM, an officer of the Cumberland Police Department observed Javas Bohrer trespassing at a business in the 200 block of Greene Street.  The officer confirmed that Bohrer was not allowed on the property.  Bohrer resisted arrest and attempted to pull away from officers.  Officers were able to take him into custody.  Bohrer was found to be in possession of suspected methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, and another controlled dangerous substance.  As officers were escorting Bohrer to a police car for transport, he began screaming and causing a disturbance.  Bohrer was transported to Central Booking…

Canal Street CDS Arrest

On Monday, January 13, 2025 at approximately 8:10 AM, an officer of the Cumberland Police Department was conducting a foot patrol in the area of Canal Street when he observed a male subject on the property where it is posted as “No Trespassing”.  The male subject was identified as Gary Trenter II.  Trenter was placed under arrest and a search of his person was conducted.  Trenter was found to be in possession of suspected methamphetamine and related drug paraphernalia.  He was transported to police headquarters where he was issued criminal citations and released pending trial. Traffic stop CDS Arrest

On Monday, January 13, 2025 at approximately 3:07 PM, an officer of the Cumberland Police Department conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 68 Westbound.  The officer contacted the operator who was identified as Jacy Witt.  A police K-9 was utilized which resulted in a positive alert for the odor of drugs.  A search of the vehicle and occupants was conducted and Witt was found to be in possession of suspected crack cocaine.  He was arrested and transported to police headquarters.  Witt was issued a criminal citation and released pending trial. Rawlings Fire Under Investigation

The Maryland State Fire Marshal is investigating a Monday morning fire on Golden Eagle Drive in Rawlings.  Nine people were displaced by the fire that was discovered shortly after 4am.  Firefighters from Rawlings Volunteer Fire Deparment responded to the blaze. The fire destroyed a single-family dwelling, two-car garage, shed,  and fifth-wheel trailer on the property. The area of origin has been determined to be the garage.  The estimated lost is $250,000. Nine people were living in the residence and safely escaped.

Racing Returning to Fairgrounds For Another Year

The roar of race car engines will be echoing off the mountain again this year at the Allegany County Fairgrounds.  At the January 9th county commissioner meeting, a one-year extension was approved for Mountain Maryland Ventures to run dirt track racing. This would be the final one-year extension for the contract. The 2025 racing schedule has not been finalized yet.
