Prominent Attorney Passes Away
Prominent Cumberland Attorney Daniel F. McMullen, Jr. passed away this week at the age of 94. During his career, McMullen held positions locally as attorney to the Allegany County Board of Education, special counsel to the Maryland State Highway Administration, as well as being in private practice. Family and friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home today from 4 to 7pm. There will be a burial mass at 11am Friday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.
Overnight Tractor Trailer accident
A rollover Tractor Trailer accident at Vocke Road ramp and Route 220 ramp closed eastbound Interstate 68 just before 9 p.m. Wednesday night. No report of injures from emergency services. The ramp remain closed until 1:40 a.m. Thursday. The accident remains under investigation Cumberland Police Department.
New Superintendent Ready To Go To Work
Dr. Michael Martirano is excited to begin work as the new Superintendent of Schools for Allegany County. He said the application process for the position was smooth and professional… “Began the process with the Board of Education; obviously they consulted with MABE, the Maryland Association of Boards of Education, which they did an amazing job in terms of their selection process, so professional. Accident Ties Up National Highway
A three vehicle accident Wednesday afternoon has backed up traffic on National Highway in Lavale. The accident took place near Parkside Boulevard.
Pimlico to be Torn Down After Preakness
The 150th running of the Preakness Stakes is May 17 at Pimlico Racecourse. Demolition of the current site is expected approximately 30 days after that race. The Maryland Stadium Authority expects a late June start to the project. They are confident they'll have the redeveloped racecourse open in time for the Preakness Stakes in 2027, moving next year's race to Laurel Park racetrack in Anne Arundel County in the interim.
Steelers Trade Wide Receiver George Pickens to Cowboys
The Pittsburgh Steelers have traded wide receiver George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys for draft picks. Pickens made acrobatic catches and was a deep threat for the Steelers but sideline antics and lack of consistent effort moved the Steelers to trade him.

On Tuesday, May 6, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department served a criminal summons on Crystal Rymer. The summons was issued as the result of a private citizen filing charges against Rymer at the District Court of Allegany County. Rymer signed for her copy of the summons and she was released pending trial. City Police Making Hires
The Cumberland Police Department is accepting applications for entry-level and lateral candidates for police employment. Candidates with out of state police certification will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The application period runs through May 19. Starting salary for entry-level police officers is $50,000. The city is also offering a signing bonus to veteran police officers with Maryland certification.
NFL Draft Coming to DC
Along with the anticipated return of the Washington Commanders to a new RFK stadium in the Nation’s Capital comes news that the 2027 NFL Draft will be taking place on the National Mall. The announcement came from the White House with President Trump, Commanders owner Josh Harris, and DC Mayor Muriel Bowser in attendance. Bowser says the draft is a great economic boost… “The NFL bringing this event to the Nation’s Capital will help us fill hotel rooms, our restaurants.
