Downtown Cumberland’s CVS Pharmacy on Baltimore Street is one of about 900 pharmacies the company is closing across the country.  Dismal third quarter earnings kicked off the downsizing.  CVS and Walgreen’s have set several store closures across the country and Rite Aid recently filed for bankruptcy.  Pharmacies have faced slumping business due to online retailers that give consumers more competitive pricing like Amazon Pharmacy or Cost Plus Drugs, which also ship to the consumer’s door.

On Sunday at 1:32 AM, officers from the Cumberland Police Department, along with personnel from the Cumberland Fire Department, responded to the Frederick Street Parking Garage in Cumberland regarding a report of an injured person. Upon arrival, responders discovered a 42-year-old male with apparent injuries. He was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene. Following an autopsy, the death has been ruled a homicide. The deceased has been identified as 42-year-old Todd Ellsworth Adams of Cumberland. Mr. Adams was known to frequent the downtown area, particularly among the homeless population. The ribbon cutting for the downtown D’Atri’s will be Friday, January 3, at 10:30 a.m.  The downtown eatery is at the McMullen Building on the corner of Baltimore and George Streets. The downtown CVS Pharmacy on Baltimore Street will be closing.  CVS is shutting down about 900 stores across the country.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have announced that Andrew McCutchen wll be returning to the team in 2025.  Cutch agreed to a one year, five million dollar deal.  McCutchen was predominantly a designated hitter last year, hitting 20 home runs, driving in 50, and batting .232.

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration is urging motorists to curtail non-essential travel on Tuesday morning due to potential icy conditions until temperatures warm. Those who must travel are urged to use extreme caution, particularly on elevated road surfaces as they freeze first. The State Highway Administration is preforming pretreating operations across the state where the precipitation will begin as snow.  Highway users are encouraged to get the latest information before setting out. Maryland Governor Wes Moore has received his controversial Bronze Star in a private ceremony in Annapolis.  The Governor learned he had received the honor while he was attending the Army-Navy football game on December 14. Lt. Gen. Michael Fenzel, who had originally told Moore to include the award on a 2006 White House Fellowship application, told reporters he was happy to be able to right a wrong.  Moore had been told he received the Bronze Star but the award paperwork never went through.  The incident came to light earlier this year when the New York Times said Moore had prematurely claimed…

On Sunday, December 22, 2024 at approximately 12:35 PM, an officer of the Cumberland Police Department was conducting a foot patrol in the area of the Baltimore Street underpass when he observed a male subject, identified as Ollie Howell III, throw something from his hand.  The officer was able to recognize that the item that Howell had thrown as drug paraphernalia.  Howell was issued a criminal citation and released pending trial. Allegany College of Maryland has gained accreditation for its Hospitality Management program from the Accreditation Commission for Programs in Hospitality Administration. The recognition ensures standards, accountability, and credibility.  The program prepares students for careers in recreation and hospitality businesses, including hotels, resorts, and others that provide lodging, activities, or food service. ACM’s Culinary Arts degree program was accredited in 2023.

On Sunday, December 22, 2024 at approximately 12:22 AM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a business in the 400 block of Virginia Avenue for a subject that had made threats about a shooting.  Police contacted the staff who reported that Christopher Weimer was in the store and he had previously made threats about shooting up the store.  The staff wanted Weimer served with a no trespass letter.  Officers contacted Weimer as he was leaving the store.  Weimer immediately began causing a disturbance and cursing at officers.  Weimer was served with the notice and he continued causing a…
