Cumberland Police Taking Action On School Threats

Over the past week, the Cumberland Police Department, in cooperation with the Allegany County Board of Education, has been actively investigating a series of threats made against local schools. Fortunately, all reported incidents have been determined to be non-credible and have been classified as pranks. As part of the investigations, officers recovered three toy guns and seized multiple student cell phones and computers. Several students have been arrested in connection with these incidents, and additional arrests are pending. School Board Adopts Capital Improvement Plan

The Allegany County Board of Education approved its Capital Improvement Plan this week. Seven projects are listed for Fiscal Year 2026 – an Early Childhood Center is planned as an addition to Washington Middle School to address requirements of the Blueprint For Maryland’s Future. Pre-Kindergarten students from South Penn, John Humbird, and West Side will relocate to the new center. Planning and design funding is being requested for Frost Elementary renovations that would eventually bring in the students from Beall Elementary. HVAC work is needed at several schools and a roof replacement for West Side Elementary is scheduled.

Stakeholders Meet About Wayfinding

Merje Design from West Chester, Pennsylvania met with local business owners, developers and officials to discuss the City of Cumberland’s Wayfinding Project – a new signage system to improve getting around the area.  Merje representatives presented their ideas and gathered input to revamp the City’s current signage layout.  John Bosio of Merje explained the goal is to make getting around simple for first time visitors… “You get off those exit ramps and you hit those one-way streets and you have to go circle around. Today, September 13, 2024, Allegany High School administration was notified of a possible threat. Cumberland Police and school administration conducted an investigation and the threat has been deemed non-credible. There was no disruption to the school day. As a precaution, there will be an increased police presence at the school today.

York Place disturbance leads to Threat of Mass Violence arrest

On Thursday, September 12th, 2024, The Cumberland Police Department arrested Hallie Hansford Holder, 61, of Cumberland MD. Holder was arrested on an active Arrest Warrant issued by the Allegany County District Court for an incident that occurred on September 12th. During that incident, officers responded to the area of York Place for the report of a disturbance. Upon arrival on the scene, officers contacted multiple subjects, including Holder. Heritage Days Offers Large Variety

The annual Heritage Days Festival this weekend on Cumberland’s Historic Washington Street promises something for history buffs, craft lovers, trivia experts and foodies. West Virginia Recognizes Suicide Prevention

West Virginia’s Department of Human Services is joining efforts to spotlight the importance of suicide prevention during National Suicide Prevention Month. Governor Jim Justice signed a proclamation recognizing September as Suicide Prevention Month in the state.
