Mission Needs Volunteers

As the Union Rescue Mission begins work on their new location at Franklin and Centre Streets, Executive Director David Ziler tells WCBC that they are in need of money and volunteers.  Those who are interested in volunteering anytime through the end of the year can assist in preparing for construction scheduled to start in January or help with finishing work later on. Federal Funds For Fruits and Veggies

Students at three elementary schools in Allegany County will have access to free fruits and vegetables through a special award from the Maryland State Department of Education.  John Humbird, South Penn, and Westernport Elementary have been awarded funds to expand student access to produce. The program provides a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables at no charge for snacks and school-based nutrition education.  Priority was given to schools with high numbers of students from low-income families.

Driving Costs Rise From A Year Ago

Triple-A has released this year’s “Your Driving Cost” study that shows the total cost to own and operate a new vehicle. In 2024, the cost is a little over $1,000 monthly that includes car payments, insurance, gas, and regular maintenance. That’s an increase of $115 from 2023 and AAA expects that number to increase in the coming years. When buying a vehicle, AAA advises buyers to set a budget, get pre-approval from a bank or credit union, and shop for the best car insurance rates.

Queen City Dr Theft arrest

On Wednesday, September 11th, 2024, The Cumberland Police Department responded to a Queen City Dr. business for the report of a theft. Employees advised that a male subject had entered the store and began to consume food products. The male then left the store without paying for the items he consumed. Officers searched the area and later located a male matching the description of the suspect. When contacted, the subject admitted to eating the items without attempting to pay for them. McKay Asked BPW To Delay Savage River Lodge Sale

Despite Senator Mike McKay’s plea for a delay, the Maryland Board of Public Works voted to approve the Department of Natural Resources’ purchase of Savage River Lodge on Wednesday.  The 42 acres, purchased for almost $9 million dollars will become part of New Germany State Park.  McKay had asked the BPW for time to have a town hall about plans for the land, saying there was no public input allowed before the sale… “The public has questions. CEDC Shares Project Updates

Several updates were shared at Tuesday’s meeting of the Cumberland Economic Development Commission. Director Matt Miller spoke on different items including a marketing initiative, plans around the grand reopening of the downtown area, and progress on business façade projects.  Also on the agenda was an update on the tract of land along Messick Road that the CEDC has held since 2022. MacMillan United Pipe Band At Heritage Days

Heritage Days takes place this weekend. New this year, Dave Williams of the Allegany County Historical Society says the award-winning MacMillan United Pipe Band will take part on Saturday at 12:30 at the Main Stage on Washington Street and will give free bagpipe lessons after their performance… “They are an award-winning operation out of Montgomery County. Dems Want More Than Tax Credit During WV Special Session
