City Police aware of numerous online threats to schools

The Cumberland City Police is aware of numerous online threats involving local schools and is currently investigating the matter. At this time, multiple jurisdictions around the United States are receiving the same types of threats. At this time, there is believed to be no threat to our local schools. As a precaution, citizens can expect to see increased patrols and officer presence in and around our schools. Any persons with information regarding this incident are encouraged to contact the Cumberland Police Department by calling 911 or (301)777-1600.

Allegany College Recognizes Summer Graduates

Allegany College of Maryland recognized 62 graduates from five states at the conclusion of the summer session. The graduates earned 66 associate degrees and certificates through the college’s in-person and online programs.

The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Miami Marlins, 3-1 Wednesday afternoon.  The PIrates went 7-0 vs. Miami this season.

Burlington Man Sentenced in Drug Case

Shawn Douglas Oates, 30, of Burlington, West Virginia, was sentenced Monday to 110 months in federal prison for conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute fentanyl. According to court documents, Oates’ residence was searched and officers seized nearly 70 grams of fentanyl. Oates has prior drug and theft convictions. Oates will be on three years of supervised release following his prison sentence.

WV Legislature Special Session

Governor Jim Justice announced his call for the West Virginia Legislature to convene in Special Session on Monday, September 30 in Charleston.  During this second Special Session of the year, Justice says he wants to address personal  income tax cuts, support for childcare, and the appropriation of supplemental funds to address other needs in the state… “I promised you that I would stand up and fight like crazy for you in trying to get another 5% tax cut for you. FSU Leaders Face No-Confidence Vote

Frostburg State University President Ron Nowaczyk and Al Delia who was acting President for a time both have received no-confidence votes from the FSU faculty. Over 80% of the faculty voted no confidence in the university leadership. Sources point to a lack of transparency, a move to Division II athletics, and top-down decision making. President Nowaczyk released a brief statement saying they are aware of the vote's outcome and a summary of comments by faculty will be takin into consideration as they move forward.

Braddock Middle In HOLD Status Briefly This Morning

Today, September 11, 2024, Braddock Middle School was placed in a brief HOLD status after school administration was notified of a possible threat with a weapon on a bus. Cumberland Police and school administration conducted an investigation and found two plastic, toy weapons. School administrators gave the “All Clear” and the instructional day has resumed as normal.
