Applicants Approved For Business Expansion Loans

Business Expansion Deferred Loans through Allegany County Economic Development are going to three local businesses. Locust Post Brewery will receive $10,000 to purchase equipment to enable take-out of their products. Queen City Creamery will receive a $10,000 loan for equipment for custard storage and kitchen equipment, and Chew On This Jerky will receive $30,000 to purchase a new route vehicle and trailer. Bench Warrant Served

On Thursday, September 12th, 2024, The Cumberland Police Department arrested Melissa Marie Redman, 57, of Cumberland MD. Redman was arrested on an active Bench Warrant issued by the Allegany County District Court on September 5th. The warrant alleged Redman failed to appear in court on that date for a previous charge of Driving on a Suspended License. Redman was taken before a District Court Commissioner for her Initial Appearance where she was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center. She is currently being held on $1,000 bond. New Substance Abuse Treatment Program For Minors

The Maryland Department of Health is launching a program for residential treatment for minors with substance abuse.  The program is in cooperation with Montgomery County and will include 24-hour medical monitoring, substance treatment services, and support in promoting personal responsibility.  The 15-bed program will be one of high intensity residential treatment for those under age 21.

Arrest Warrant Issued in Murder of Keyser Woman

West Virginia State Police have issued an arrest warrant in connection with the death of a Keyser woman September 1.  Emma Julianne Westover, 22, was found dead in a vehicle near Antioch and police said the cause of death was determined to be homicide.  Police said William Blondell Ludwick III, 33, will be charged with first-degree murder, use of a firearm during the commission of felony, grand larceny and felony destruction of property. Ludwick is currently incarcerated in Ohio and will be returned to Mineral County at a later date.  

ACPS Issues Statement About Threats

Allegany County Public Schools was made aware of school violence threats being shared on social media, nationwide. We want to assure you that all potential threats are taken seriously. We’ve been working closely with area law enforcement agencies, who have found the threats to be non-credible. As a precaution, expect to see increased patrols and officer presence in and around our schools. The safety of our students and staff is our top priority. 

Mission Needs Volunteers

As the Union Rescue Mission begins work on their new location at Franklin and Centre Streets, Executive Director David Ziler tells WCBC that they are in need of money and volunteers.  Those who are interested in volunteering anytime through the end of the year can assist in preparing for construction scheduled to start in January or help with finishing work later on. Federal Funds For Fruits and Veggies

Students at three elementary schools in Allegany County will have access to free fruits and vegetables through a special award from the Maryland State Department of Education.  John Humbird, South Penn, and Westernport Elementary have been awarded funds to expand student access to produce. The program provides a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables at no charge for snacks and school-based nutrition education.  Priority was given to schools with high numbers of students from low-income families.

Driving Costs Rise From A Year Ago

Triple-A has released this year’s “Your Driving Cost” study that shows the total cost to own and operate a new vehicle. In 2024, the cost is a little over $1,000 monthly that includes car payments, insurance, gas, and regular maintenance. That’s an increase of $115 from 2023 and AAA expects that number to increase in the coming years. When buying a vehicle, AAA advises buyers to set a budget, get pre-approval from a bank or credit union, and shop for the best car insurance rates.
