U.S. Small Business Administration offering Low-Interest Loans Disaster Loans
According WBAL News out of Baltimore, the United States SBA is offering low-interest federal disaster loans to small businesses and non-profit organization due to the flooding in Western Maryland in May. The disaster assistance declaration covers Allegany, Garrett and Washington counties, as we as jurisdictions in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. For more information, interested parties should contact SBA's customer service center at 800-659-2955 or email disastercustomerservice@sba.gov. This comes more than a week after the Trump administration denied a request for disaster assistance.
Criminal Summons Served
On Wednesday, July 30th, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department served a Criminal Summons on Ronald William Crawford, 46, of Ridgeley, WV. The summons was in reference to an incident that occurred on June 23rd, 2025, at a business in the 200 block of N. Mechanic St. On that date, officers responded to the business for the report of a theft. Once on scene, It was learned that an employee had a wallet stolen from an "employees only" room inside the store. MD Republicans Opposed Moore’s Expedited Hiring of Ex-Fed Workers
Maryland House and Senate Republicans sent a letter to the state Legislative Policy Committee this week expressing opposition to Governor Moore’s plan to continue a program that rapidly hires former federal employees. The state announced a hiring freeze for most jobs on July 1st. Legislators claim the program is inefficient in that it has only hired 251 former fed employees since February and only 7% of those came through the expedited program.

Clearway Energy’s wind turbines atop Dans Mountain are now online. Nine turbines placed along the mountaintop will generate enough energy to power 24,000 homes. Constellation Energy is purchasing the power. Firefighters Recognized for Heart Attack Response
The City of Cumberland presented Life Saving Awards to five fire department members for their response in an emergency call at Constitution Park. Unclaimed Property Returns Set Record
The state of West Virginia set a new record for returning lost funds to residents, with nearly $40.6 million dollars’ worth of unclaimed property returned in fiscal year 2025. State Treasurer Larry Pack announced that almost 21,000 claims were paid out covering 65,000 pieces of property. Since 1967, the unclaimed property program has returned over $350 million to rightful owners. The state database lists more than $475 million dollars’ worth of property to be claimed.
