Carver Community Center Board Takes To Social Media
The Carver Community Center has launched a Facebook page dedicated to updates on the progress of the restoration work happening at 340 Frederick Street. Currently the page features a link to a Request for Qualifications for cleanup and restoration services as well as a request for designs for a logo for the center. The center’s board has had two listening sessions with the public as well as a public walk-through of the property. The board hopes the social media page will enable more residents the opportunity to participate in the facility’s restoration.
State Announces Microgrants For Business
The Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development announced the opening date of the next application round of the Business Boost microgrant program. Microgrants range from $20,000 to $50,000 to support small businesses who need capital for growth and/or expansion opportunities. Applications will be accepted online starting September 23, 2024, at Noon. The Business Boost microgrant assists businesses seeking to expand or establish a location, with a preference to supporting home-based businesses in establishing their first commercial location outside of the home.
September 11 Observances Scheduled
Cumberland City Firefighters will have a short ceremony Wednesday morning to remember those killed in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington D.C. Fire Chief Shannon Adams said people can gather at the fire station on the corner of Mechanic and Bedford Streets for the ceremony which will start at 8:46 am – the time the first plane hit the Twin Towers in New York. The Flight 93 Memorial in Stoystown, Pennsylvania will have a public observance beginning at 9:45 am featuring the ringing of the Bells of Remembrance.
BURGLARY ARREST
On Monday, September 9, 2024 at approximately 8:50 AM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a residence in the 500 block of N. Centre Street for a breaking and entering complaint. Officers contacted the landlord who explained that a male and female were just inside the apartment and they were not allowed to be there. The suspects were identified as Timothy Elder and Marissa Tice. After further investigation, Elder and Tice were arrested and transported to Central Booking. They were later seen by a District Court Commissioner for a bond hearing. Elder posted a $2,500 unsecured personal bond. …
Plan To Prevent Suicide In Schools
Suicide is the third leading cause of death for young people ages 10-24 in Maryland. The Maryland Action Plan to Prevent Suicide in Schools from the Department of Health is tailored to different audiences including educators who are often first points of contact for struggling students. Justice Calling Special Session
Governor Jim Justice is calling the West Virginia legislature to Charleston for a special session at the end of the month. Crosstown Bridge in State’s Crosshairs
