Meet the Squad Set at Allegany High School
Allegany High School's Meet the Squad festivities will be Thursday at 6 p.m. in the school gymnasium on Haystack Mountain. All fall sports teams will be introduced as well as Miss Campera and her court. There will be performances by the cheerleaders, Arrowettes, and band. The concession stand will be open, as will the Gridiron Club booth.

DNR Announces Archery Season
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources will open the archery hunting season for white-tailed and sika deer on Sept. 6. The season runs intermittently through Jan. 31, 2025. For the 2024-25 deer season, the statewide bag limit for white-tailed bucks is two deer total – no more than one per weapon season. Hunters have the option to take one additional bonus buck in Region B – the state’s central, southern, and eastern regions- after purchasing a Bonus Antlered Deer Stamp.
Point State Park Fountain Turns 50
An iconic fountain that greets visitors to Pittsburgh is celebrating 50 years in existence. The Commonwealth dedicated the fountain at Point State Park on August 30, 1974. Its design is an ode to the city’s three rivers as a Point of Confluence, a Point of Conflict and a Point of Renewal. It was first turned on at the start of the July 23, 1974 Major League Baseball All Star Game at Three Rivers Stadium. No Class Disruption At Fort Hill Following Post
On September 3, 2024, Administration at Fort Hill High School was notified of a threatening social media post, made after school hours. The Allegany County Sheriff's Office, Cumberland City Police, and school administration conducted investigations. There was no disruption to the school day today.
Woman Attempts To Elude Bench Warrant
On September 3 at approximately 2:00 P.M., the Allegany County Combined Warrant Unit, assisted by the Allegany County Sheriff's Office, executed a search warrant at 446 Seymour Street in Cumberland in an attempt to serve a bench warrant on Tara Rene Rice-Platter. Tara Rene Rice-Platter, 38 of Cumberland, was wanted on a District Court Bench Warrant for Violation of Probation. The original conviction was for Theft Less Than $100 where she received a 90-day suspended jail term with 24-months Supervised Probation. Construction traffic alert Harrison Street
Potomac Edison will repair an electrical pole in the area of South Liberty Street and West Harrison Street today from 7a.m till 1p.m. Utility crews will be along West Harrison Street between Mechanic Street and South Centre Street as the electrical pole is swapped out. There is a possibility of power disruption to the downtown area that will affect businesses, residents and local traffic light systems.
City Considers Food Ban At Riverside
A draft ordinance was discussed at Tuesday’s Cumberland Mayor and City Council work session that would ban food and drink from being brought, possessed, or consumed at Riverside Park. It is another move being considered by the City to help with the ongoing issues of trash and vermin affecting the area around the historic George Washington Headquarters. New Mural At Rosenbaum Building Revealed
CG Enterprises unveiled a new mural at the Rosenbaum building downtown on Tuesday. The mural that resembles a vintage postcard of Cumberland, was designed by artist Marc Phillips. Business Showcase Will Include Workshop
The Allegany County Chamber of Commerce is holding their annual Local Business Showcase on Wednesday, October 16 at Frostburg State University. Local businesses that are members of the Chamber can register for the showcase on the Chamber website through October 2.
