DNR AT Maryland State Fair

Maryland’s State Fair is underway through September 8th at the Timonium Fairgrounds in Baltimore County. The Department of Natural Resources will have displays, exhibits, and activities including a boating simulator, interactive games and a kids’ camping cabin to explore. The DNR is also recruiting for positions including foresters, rangers, biologists, and conservation law enforcement officers.

Baltimore News Website Praises Cumberland’s Comeback

The Baltimore Banner, an online news site, published a feature article Sunday entitled "Cumberland Comeback:  How Remote Work is Reviving This Western Maryland Mountain Town."  The article, written by Brenna Smith, focuses on Max and Jessie Green, Cumberland natives who returned to town when remote work became more popular and feasible.  The article also details the Centre Street Collective and Drew Knippenberg's return to Cumberland.  The article centers upon a post-pandemic boost in interest in downtown Cumberland.  

Day One Goes Well at Bishop Walsh

Monday was the first day of school for students enrolled in Allegany County Public Schools, Calvary Christian Academy, and Bishop Walsh School.  Bishop Walsh is a pre-K through 12th grade Catholic school on Haystack Mountain and opened in 1966.  The school is named for Cumberland native and Maryknoll missionary Bishop James Edward Walsh, who was imprisoned in China for 12 years.  Tony Orndoff is the academic dean at BW and he told WCBC News that the first day was successful thanks to the prep work of the teachers last week and the family atmosphere at the school.

Pennsylvania Man Drowns in Cheat Lake Sunday

A Pennsylvania man drowned in Cheat Lake Sunday. Authorities said the body of Jeffrey Gerhardt, 61, of Smock, Pennsylvania, was recovered from the water near the Morgan Run Road Dock. Gerhardt with his wife and dog Sunday at 12:30 p.m. when he jumped into the water to retrieve a dog toy. Investigators said he began to struggle before going under the water. Officers from the West Virginia Natural Resources Police responded along with the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department, Morgantown Police Department and Cheat Lake Volunteer Fire Department and Mon EMS. Gerhardt was recovered around 5 p.m. Sunday.

Warrant Arrests – August 22

Thursday, August 22, 2024 Christopher Chase King, 41 of Cumberland, was arrested on a District Court warrant for Resist/Interfere With Arrest and Obstructing and Hindering. He was released on a $5,000 Unsecured Personal Bond. Joshua Michael Clark Sr., 29 of Cumberland, was served two (2) District Court Bench Warrants for Violation of Probation. In one case he was convicted of Violating a Protective Order and was sentenced to 90-days in jail with all but 4-days suspended and 18-months supervised probation and in the other case he was convicted of Theft: $100 To Under $1,500 and Violating a Protective Order and…

Meritus Health Named To Forbes Best-In-State List

Meritus Health in Hagerstown has been named to the Forbes’ list of America’s Best-In-State Employers. Employers on the list have been identified from an independent survey of over 160,000 employees working for companies that employ at least 500 people. The results were based on employee willingness to recommend their employer to friends and family as well as evaluating other employers in the same industry.  This is the second time in three years that Meritus has been recognized.

Cardin Says Soon For Vote on Bridge Funding

Maryland Senator Ben Cardin said he expects a vote on funding for a new Francis Scott Key Bridge in the next month, as lawmakers consider a continuing resolution to keep the federal government operating past September 30th. The cost of new bridge is estimated at $1.9 billion dollars. Cardin said funding for the bridge is tied to funding for other bridge projects around the country. Congress will be back in session after Labor Day with only three weeks to pass the legislation needed.

Corioni Will Play Role of Bad Guy If Needed

The Allegany County Commissioners approved the takeover of the Georges Creek Ambulance Service last Thursday, but it is only further complicating the issues with EMS coverage for the county. Cas Taylor Bridge Should Open Friday

At least one bridge will be back open to traffic in Cumberland come this Friday.  The Cas Taylor Memorial Bridge, a-k-a the Baltimore Street Bridge, should be ready for traffic by the end of the week.  Cumberland Mayor Ray Morriss said he and the city’s engineer have looked over the bridge project and the opening is a go. “August the 30th is the scheduled date.  Bobby Smith and I talked about that last week.  When all the paving and everything got done and it looks it looks like it will probably be next week or next Friday, we will open…

Greenbrier Resort Off The Auction Block

The Greenbrier Hotel Corporation, owned by West Virginia Governor Jim Justice and his family, has reached an agreement with the credit collection company that was planning a foreclosure sale of the historic resort.  Beltway Capital will receive an undisclosed amount to be paid in full by October 24th. Beltway reserves its rights if the Justice family fails to perform.
