Maryland Senate Race a Dead Heat

A new poll indicates a deadlocked Senate race in Maryland, where Republicans are aiming to flip a long-held Democrat seat in an overwhelmingly blue state. Former two-term Gov. Larry Hogan, the Republican nominee in the race, and Democratic nominee Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks both stand at 46% support among likely voters in Maryland, according to an AARP public opinion survey released on Tuesday. Seven percent were undecided, according to the survey conducted Aug. 14-20.

Cas Taylor Bridge Will Reopen on Wednesday, August 28

The City of Cumberland Engineering Department would like to notify the public that the Baltimore Street Bridge will be restored to two-way traffic tomorrow, August 28th, at 9:00 AM. The Greene Street lane reduction will remain in effect until construction on the clock tower is finished. Traffic devices and signage will be in place due to the lane reduction on Greene Street. Additional information will be released in the event the lane reduction changes.  

Loans Available For Farmers Facing Drought

The State of Maryland is letting farmers in the state know that low-interest federal financial assistance from the U.S. Department of Agriculture is available to assist Maryland farmers in central and western counties.  Farmers in Allegany, Garrett, and Washington counties that are experiencing drought conditions are eligible for emergency loans that may be used to meet recovery needs including replacing essential equipment or livestock or refinancing certain debts. PJM Planning Failure Will Mean Higher Rates

Some Marylanders’ utility bills are set to go up hundreds of dollars starting next year, according to a state agency report. The Office of the People’s Council says that PJM Interconnection, the regional energy grid operator is to blame.  Baltimore Gas and Electric customers will see increases of $250 or more per year starting in 2025 while locally, Potomac Edison customers may see a monthly increase of around $18. Virginia Avenue Theft Arrest

On Monday, August 26, 2024 at approximately 12:27 PM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a business in the 400 block of Virginia Avenue for a theft complaint.  Police located the suspect, David Swanger, on Virginia Avenue.  An officer contacted the staff who reported that Swanger stole property from the store.  After further investigation, Swanger was issued a criminal citation and released pending trial. County Wants To Work Together For Solution

After a weekend of trading written statements publicly about continued budgeting and staffing issues between Allegany County and the union representing EMS employees, it seemed like all that was getting done was pointing fingers. County Amends Animal Control Laws

WV Solar Plant Approved

A new solar plant will power an estimated 90,000 homes in Nicholas and Clay counties in West Virginia.  The state Public Service Commission approved construction of the 150-megawatt solar electric plant on a former surface mine. Apprenticeship Development

Governor Moore announced a nearly $23 million initiative from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Apprenticeship Building America initiative to connect more than 7,000 jobseekers to new apprenticeship opportunities in Maryland.  The funding will help recruit under-represented Marylanders to fill registered apprenticeship programs in industries including health care, technology, and transportation.  Among those receiving funding are The University of Maryland Global Campus, The Asian American Center of Frederick and the Amalgamated Transit Union.
