US Cellular Customers May Receive Better Reception
U.S. Cellular customers may begin to see better signal reception, especially in rural areas. T-Mobile has purchased the company’s wireless operations in a deal valued near $4.4 billion. T-Mobile will get more than 4 million new customers in the deal and current U. S. Cellular customers will gain access to its 5G network, getting more coverage area and speed. Customers can remain on their current plans or switch to a T-Mobile plan without cost.

“The Hump” Being Restored at CSX Railyard in Cumberland
CSX Corporation is silent on the subject, but work is indeed going on at what is known as the “hump” in the Cumberland rail yard. The location was dismantled in 2017 when the late Hunter Harrison took over CSX and implemented precision railroading, an attempt to minimize the number of times a freight car must be sorted in rail yards. On Wednesday, May 29, 2024, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, customers on Frederick and Bedford Streets from Linden Street to Conrad Avenue will experience an interruption of water service for a valve replacement. Beginning Wednesday, May 29, 2024, through Friday, May 31, 2024, from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm, Frederick Street will be closed to traffic from Victoria Street to Pearre Avenue for utility work. Traffic will be detoured at Lincoln Street.

Allegany County Governement May 28, 2024 – We have been exploring various scenarios to address the decreased EMS budget. Unfortunately, our discussions so far have not yielded enough significant savings needed to balance the budget. We remain committed to fiscal responsibility and not raising taxes for the residents of Allegany County, so we continue to work diligently to close the gap. Special Gift Will Put Musical Instruments in WV Schools
The West Virginia Department of Arts is announcing that a special gift will enable musical instruments to be placed in all of the state’s middle schools. CSX To Re-Install, Improve Hump at Cumberland
WCBC has learned that CSX is making an investment of between $32 and $40 million dollars to re-install and upgrade the "hump" faciility in the Cumberland train yard. The Hump was removed in 2017 under than CSX Chief Hunter Harrison who wanted to use the concept of precision railroading in building trains. That has cost CSX across the country millions of dollards and several other yards are also abandoning the idea. Over $700,000 from ARC Coming to Local Counties
Over $700,000 in funding from the Appalachian Regional Commission will assist projects in Garrett, Allegany, and Washington counties. Western Maryland AHEC will have funding for their Innovation Readiness Training Medical Mission. Allegany College will purchase computer technology for nursing and medical assistant programs, and Garrett County will have planning funds for the Meadow Mountain trail. Hagerstown Community College and Frostburg State University also received funding for projects. Maryland’s federal delegation announced the funding.

Recently, there have been reports of different phone and text message scams affecting area residents. Incidents have included texts from scammers posing as a local credit union and fake phone calls from the Allegany County Sheriff’s office.
