Cumberland man arrested for Kidnapping, Assault, and Resisting Arrest
On Sunday, August 18th, 2024, Officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the ten-digit block of Virginia Avenue for the report of a kidnapping. While en route to the call, Officers were advised a male, who was later identified as Joshua Michael Clark Sr., had an active Final Protective Order barring him from being at the residence and contacting any of the protected persons. The Final Order also removed parental custody of the protected child from Clark. Appalachian Leadership Institute Graduates 40
Forty fellows from thirteen different Appalachian states recently graduated from the Appalachian Leadership Institute. ALI is an economic development and leadership program for the region’s public, private, and non-profit leaders. One of the forty graduates is Dr. Stephanie Hutter-Thomas of Cumberland. Founder and CEO of Appalachian Recovery Concepts, Hutter-Thomas and other graduates will take new skills into serving their communities through civil service, healthcare, tourism and other public and private endeavors.
Stevenson Receives USM Board of Regents Staff Award
Rubin Stevenson, senior associate athletics director at Frostburg State University, has been selected for the 2024 University System of Maryland Board of Regents Staff Award. The award is based on impact in their department, school, or community and the quality of work within their institution. Stevenson has been with FSU for 32 years and has advised more than 1,000 first-semester students, ensuring their seamless integration into the FSU community.
Maryland Department of Labor Files Heat Standards
The Maryland Department of Labor has filed draft heat stress regulations to protect indoor and outdoor workers when the heat index hits 80 degrees. A 30-day public comment period runs through August 26. The draft standard requires employers to put an effective heat illness prevention plan in writing and provide workers with annual heat stress training. Bench Warrant Served
On Monday, August 19th, 2024, the Cumberland Police Department served a Bench Warrant on Tiffany Marie Chandler. The Allegany County District Court issued the warrant due to Chandler’s failure to obey the conditions of her release pending trial. Chandler was arrested and taken to the Allegany County Detention Center where she is awaiting her initial appearance before a District Court Commissioner. Child reunited to Mother after abduction
Fast response by area Law Enforcement Monday night resulted in reuniting a 6-year-old boy with his mother in South Cumberland. Cumberland Police Department responding with the support of Maryland State Trooper 5 and other law enforcement agencies just before 9 p.m. for an active abduction on Boone Street. Joshua Clark violated a protection order when he abducted the young boy. Officers quickly surrounding the area located Joshua and the child. Joshua was taken into custody in the area of Race Street at 9:25 p.m. Emergency Medical services evaluated the boy and was returned to his mother.
Morrisey Cautions College Students On Scams
West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey is warning college students looking for jobs to be mindful of employment scams. College is the first time many young adults are in charge of their personal affairs, which makes them more susceptible to scammers. Students should be wary of unsolicited attempts to gain access to personal information and work-at-home positions as well as any job offers that include an exchange of financial information or money. Morrisey advises students to do thorough background study on a business before applying.
Hopkins Receives Federal Money To Improve Cancer Surgery
US Senator Chris Van Hollen and members of Maryland’s congressional delegation announced on Thursday that Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore will receive $20 million in federal funding to improve cancer surgery. The funds will be used to develop new surgical imaging tools, allowing surgeons to better distinguish between healthy tissue and cancer. The award is part of President Joe Biden’s “Cancer Moonshot Initiative”, which aims to reduce the cancer death rate in the US by at least half by 2047.
Gov. Moore warns of difficult fiscal decisions ahead
