Anti-Violence Grants Awarded
West Virginia Governor Jim Justice awarded over $1 million in “Stop Violence Against Women” program grants to 21 projects across the state. Statewide projects include providing training and education for victim service providers, law enforcement, and court personnel. Governor Justice said the grants are already producing positive results in uncovering information on crimes… “We just learned about a 24 year-old crime in West Virginia that was solved thanks to the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative also known as the Safety Grant.”
FCC Wants Notice On AI Political Ads
The Federal Communications Commission is proposing labels be added to any radio and television political commercials created with the aid of artificial intelligence. FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel has come under fire for wanting the labels, with the Federal Elections Commission saying the proposal invades their jurisdiction and conflicts with current regulations. CDS ARREST
On August 15th, 2024 at apprimately 11:58 a.m an officer was patrolling in the area of Maryland Avenue and observed Tracy Kerry Williams. The officer was familiar with Williams and knew Williams to have active bench warrants. The officer contacted Williams and eventually placed him under arrest for the warrants. A search was conducted incident to arrest, and Williams was found to have an amount of a controlled dangerous substance in his possession. Williams was issued a citation for CDS, and transported to Central Booking where he was later seen by a District Court commissioner and released on his own…
ARREST WARRANTS SERVED
On August 15th, 2024 the Cumberland Police Department served an arrest warrant on Brittany Alice Loscig. The warrant was issued after the Cumberland Police responded to an incident in the 400 block of Baltimore Avenue on August 12th,2024. Officers contacted Loscig, and were able to determine that Loscig was trespassing, due to a vacate order posted June 24th, 2024. An officer later filed for charges on Loscig at District Court. A warrant was issued and Loscig was later placed under arrest for the offense. She was transported to Central Booking where she was later seen by a District Court commissioner…
America’s 911 Ride today
24th America’s 911 Ride, sponsored by America’s 911 Foundation, is come through Cumberland today between 8:30 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. 270 motorcyclists will trek through the Narrows and into Cumberland before heading to Rocky Gap via Frederick Street. America’s 911 Foundation honors those lost in the September 11, 2001 terror attacks. Board Member Roger Flick says the ride sponsors scholarships for the children of first responders or first responders who are a sophomore or junior in college.
Route 40 Elementary Will Update Heating
The State of Maryland announced on Wednesday that the Maryland Energy Administration will direct $24 million to 31 projects over 13 different school districts throughout the state to implement large-scale electrification and solar projects. The funds include nearly $3 million earmarked for Garrett County, including $2.5 million for the electrification of the boiler system at Route 40 Elementary School and additional funds for a ground-mounted solar project. Maryland has a goal of a 60% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2031.
Brown Wants Gun Sale Regulations
Attorney General Anthony G. Brown joined a coalition of 22 attorneys general in support of state and federal laws regulating the sale of guns to keep communities safe. The coalition filed an amicus brief arguing that federal laws preventing individuals from transporting or receiving firearms from outside the state in which they reside, except through a federally licensed firearms dealer, are essential to protecting public safety. The coalition argues that federal regulations on the transport of guns across state lines do not infringe on second amendment rights, but they do protect public safety and fortify state gun laws.
Hazy Skies Are From Canadian Fires
If the skies seem a little hazy, it isn’t your eyes. Diffuse smoke from Canadian wildfires is drifting into the region and will be around through the weekend. Pending rain may help clear out the haze, but the Maryland Department of the Environment says the smoke does not warrant any air quality alerts like the ones issued in June of 2023 due to widespread wildfires.
Gov. Justice announces Revenue Secretary and State Auditor certify 4% income tax reduction, file with state tax office
Gov. Jim Justice announced today that Revenue Secretary Larry Pack and State Auditor JB McCuskey inked a letter certifying a 4% reduction in West Virginia’s personal income tax. The certification has been filed with the State Tax Division and will take effect January 1, 2025. The Department of Revenue and State Auditor's Office collaborated to verify the accuracy of Fiscal Year 2024 tax collections, culminating in today’s formal agreement. Gov. Justice announced the reduction in July after state revenue collections exceeded inflation, as stipulated in House Bill 2526, which he signed in 2023. America’s 9/11 Ride Coming Through Friday Morning
America's 9/11 Ride will be coming through Cumberland Friday morning between 8:15 and 9:30am. Almost 300 motorcyclists are taking part in the 24th annual ride that honors the memory of those lost in the September 2001 terror attacks on New York City and the Pentagon in Washington D.C. The ride begins at the Flight 93 Memorial Site in Shanksville, Pennsylvania and will arrive in Cumberland via the Narrows and Mechanic Streets. The ride will then proceed out Frederick Street and stop for a rest break at Rocky Gap State Park before continuing on to Arlington, Virginia. Riders will then head…
