ARREST WARRANT SERVED

On Saturday, June 22, 2024, the Cumberland Police Department served an arrest warrant on Kenneth Martz.  The warrant was issued in connection with an assault investigation.  On June 17, 2024 at approximately 9:06 PM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a residence in the 200 block of Pennsylvania Avenue for the report of an assault.  Officers contacted the victim who had sustained injuries.  Suspects were later developed and one of the suspects was identified as Kenneth Martz.  After further investigation, charges were filed against Martz at the District Court of Allegany County.  He was arrested and transported to…

CRIMINAL SUMMONS SERVED

On Friday, June 21, 2024, the Cumberland Police Department served a criminal summons on Eric Brewington. The summons was issued as the result of a private citizen filing for charges against Brewington at the District Court of Allegany County.  Brewington signed for his copy of the summons and he was released pending trial. Longtime Garrett County Judge Passes Away

Retired Garrett County Judge James Sherbin died Wednesday at the age of 78.  Sherbin served as a Circuit Court judge from 1996 until 2014.

Frostburg State May Close Two Buildings

Frostburg State University may be closing two of its buildings.  The university is facing a 10 million dollar shortfall.  The Cumberland Times-News reports that possible closures would be Old Main and the Guild building.

Baltimore Street Bridge Closure Begins Next Week

The Baltimore Street Bridge will be closed starting Monday at 7 a.m. until August 5.  The bridge will still be open to pedestrian traffic.

Saturday Activities Abound

There is no shortage of things to do this weekend in Western Maryland. Saturday sees the Cumberland Garden Tour taking place, focusing on the downtown and North Centre Street areas, the annual Juneteenth celebration at the Canal Place Festival grounds runs from Noon to 6pm, and a fundraiser for the UPMC Kidney Dialysis unit will take place Saturday evening at the 1812 Brewery on Mason Road starting at 6pm.  Queen City Motors is celebrating its 50th anniversary Saturday until 2 p.m.

Monument for the Unborn Service Sunday

This Sunday at 2pm will mark the 20th  Monument for the Unborn Memorial Service, held at Davis Memorial Cemetery on Uhl Highway.  Sponsored by the Cumberland Historic Cemetery Organization, the service will honor those who have been the victims of abortion.  Organization Chaplain Michael Mudge says they moved the ceremony from January to June to align with the Supreme Court’s overturning of the Roe V Wade decision.

Assault Arrest on Bedford Street

CRIMINAL SUMMONS SERVED   On Friday, June 21, 2024, the Cumberland Police Department served a criminal summons on John Sell.  The summons was issued in connection with an incident that occurred on June 18, 2024.  On this date at approximately 6:54 AM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a residence in the 500 block of Bedford Street for an assault.  Police arrived and learned that John Sell had assaulted multiple people in the residence.   When police engaged Sell, Sell assaulted multiple officers.  Sell was taken into custody and transported to the hospital for an evaluation.  Charges were filed…
