Baltimore Street Trespass, Disorderly conduct, and Theft arrest
On 8/02/2024 at approximately 5:45 PM the Cumberland City Police were dispatched to a business in the 100 block of Baltimore Street for a subject causing a disturbance. Upon arrival officers made contact with staff who directed them to Shauwn Layton. Layton was behind the counter of the business that separates patrons from employees. Layton was consuming a drink that he had not purchased and yelling at staff. Layton was requested to come from behind the counter but began yelling at the officers. Promise Project Focuses On Quality Foster Care
The West Virginia Department of Human Services and Aetna Better Health are collaborating to support children in the state’s foster care system and their families through the Promise Project. Putting faces to cases, facilitating provider and child placement meetings and an intervention team are key components. The Promise Projects aims to place each child in the right environment for the appropriate duration to provide smoother transitions back to loved ones after foster care.
Baltimore Avenue DUI Arrest
On 08/02/2024 at approximately 9:45 PM the Cumberland City Police Department were dispatched to the 400 block of Baltimore Avenue for a motor vehicle crash. Upon arrival officers observed that a vehicle traveling on Baltimore Avenue driven by Kenneth Wilson III had struck a parked vehicle. Officers detected signs of impairment from Wilson. Wilson submitted to a series of field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence. City of Cumberland Announces Application Details of Citizens Local Government Academy
City of Cumberland invites you to participate in the first annual Citizens Local Government Academy. This program will provide opportunities to local residents to learn more about the town government and how it operates by attending a variety of sessions and other activities. The Citizens Local Government Academy includes a 7-week class schedule, one class per week, and each class is expected to run for two hours. Baltimore Street Bridge Closure Continues
The Baltimore Street Bridge will continue to be closed until Friday, August 16, to allow the final sections of the cement bridge deck to cure. In addition, the Greene Street lane reduction will be in effect until that day as well. Signage will be in place to detour vehicles to Downtown and West Side. Pedestrian access will still be permitted across the bridge. Once the concrete has cured to its necessary strength, the bridge will be opened to one-way traffic. The contractor anticipates having the bridge opened for two-way traffic in October.
Savage River Lodge To Become State Recreation Resource
Within the $34 million dollars in federal funding requested by US Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen for economic development projects in Maryland, almost $1.5 million dollars is allotted for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources to purchase the Savage River Lodge in Frostburg. The purchase will create a tract of almost 800 acres of public land in the region. Funding will support planning and renovation costs to create a public access recreation source with discounted admissions for underserved communities. The lodge business will close in late November of this year.
City of Cumberland Public Notice
The Mayor and City Council of Cumberland will meet in public session beginning at 4:00 p.m. in the 2nd floor Council Chambers of City Hall on Monday, August 5, 2024, for the purpose of immediately closing the meeting to receive legal advice regarding the project at 19 Frederick Street and to consult with staff regarding the City’s lawsuit against CSX as well as to receive the advice of the City Solicitor regarding that matter. Possible Plane Crash in Oakland Area Being Investigated
Garrett County Fire and Rescue, Maryland State Police and Department of Natural Resources responding to Glendale Road Bridge in Oakland. There is a report of a plane crash with yellow in color smoke reported. Units are currently investigating. There are reports of a small plane that frequents the area.
