Maryland Housing and Community Development is warning of an online scam by an entity posing as DHCD falsely claiming to administer the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program.  Shared on Facebook, the scam depicts a printed flyer announcing the opening of a waitlist for specific properties as part of the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program. It encourages residents to provide personal information through a fraudulent link or to visit DHCD’s Lanham headquarters. This advertisement was not created or shared by DHCD, and DHCD  does not endorse any such solicitation.

Paving Scheduled for Baltimore/Mechanic Streets Intersection

The City of Cumberland Engineering Department, on behalf of Belt Paving, would like to notify the public that Mechanic Street / Baltimore Street Intersection will be reduced to one lane with flagging operations Monday, 6/24, and Tuesday, 6/25. Paving operations will occur between 7:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Traffic devices and signage will be in place to route vehicles through the paving operation.  Traffic is expected to be fully restored after work is completed at 4:00 PM on each day. Pirates Join Other Clubs with Logo Advertising on Sleeve

Starting Friday night, the Pittsburgh Pirates will be wearing an advertising logo on their sleeves.  A three year deal with Sheetz takes effect on home and away jerseys.  Sheetz has 70 stores in the greater Pittsburgh area and the convenience store chain began in Altoona in 1952, home of the Pirates' AA affiliate, the Altoona Curve.

WV Chef Receives Distinguished West Virginian Award

Governor Jim Justice presented Chef Paul Smith with a Distinguished West Virginian Award after becoming the first state native to win the prestigious James Beard Award for culinary excellence. Smith claimed the coveted 'Best Chef: Southeast' award as part of the annual James Beard Foundation Restaurant and Chef Awards in Chicago this month. Smith owns multiple restaurants in Charleston and is active in his community, volunteering for various local nonprofits and education groups.  Justice thanked Smith for his efforts in positively representing the state…    

Election Security Funding At Stake

Election Security in the United States is being threatened through the cut of funding by the federal government.  The House Appropriations committee rejected the Biden Administration’s request for millions in election security funding, leaving many local elections officials with challenges for the upcoming presidential election.  Brianna Lennon, a county clerk for Boone County, Missouri, spoke with WCBC saying that more funding is necessary for a safe, and fair election…

Tactor trailer fire Interstate 68

Update 6:55am: Emergency crews remain on scene cleaning up the early tractor trailer fire. One westbound lane of Interstate 68 is now reopen… Lane 1 you're far left lane. Allegany County Emergency services on scene this morning of a tractor trailer fire, Interstate 68 westbound near mile marker 57 in Flintstone area. The driver of the truck has disconnected from the trailer which is transporting chicken waste byproduct. Westbound Lanes one and two have been shut down for the operation.  

WCBC Caller’s Issue Resolved By City

After every Cumberland City Council meeting, Mayor Ray Morriss joins WCBC’s Dave Norman the next day to go over business the city has conducted.  Mayor Morriss also takes listener calls and was recently able to assist a local resident with an issue at his home in North End.  The caller needs to be able to install a chairlift for his wife and Mayor Morriss says the City has now approved an encroachment agreement making it possible…    

Pardons Address “Wealth Gap” and Inequality

With Governor Moore’s order to pardon marijuana convictions for over 175,000 individuals, the state is seeking to right wrongs concerning unequal enforcement and incarceration.  In Moore’s remarks, he noted that the legal system has historically been inequitable… Attorney General Anthony Brown said previous enforcement of cannabis laws has burdened communities of color…

Allegany College Offers Weekend Hybrid Nursing Program

Applications for Allegany College of Maryland’s hybrid nursing program are open through the end of June.  Students learn on their own time during the week with in-person labs on weekends. Clinical shifts will be performed at UPMC Western Maryland.
