Veterinary Services At Fairgrounds Today

The Army Reserve is providing free exams and rabies shots for dogs and cats at the Allegany County Fairgrounds today.  The services were moved to the fairgrounds from the original location of the Allegany County Animal Shelter due to expected high heat indexes.  Reservists will do exams and provide rabies vaccinations.

ACM To Begin 63rd Academic Year

Allegany College of Maryland begins their 63rd academic year on August 19th. Registration for the fall term is still open and admission is free. Courses are offered in multiple formats including in-person, online and hybrid, and delayed or compressed courses are also available starting Tuesday, September 10. Daily in-person tours of the Cumberland campus are available beginning August 5th. National Night Out Cumberland

National Night Out has its annual celebration Tuesday, August 6th with an event taking place in front of the Salvation Army on Sommerville Avenue  This year 120 community groups and agencies will be set up for the evening. Cas Taylor Bridge Closure Extended Through August 16

The City of Cumberland Engineering Department, on behalf of Carl Belt Inc., would like to notify the public that the Baltimore Street Bridge will continue to be closed to thru traffic until Friday, 8/16/24, to allow the final sections of the bridge deck to cure. In addition, the Greene Street lane reduction will be in effect until 8/16/24 as well. Signage will be in place to detour vehicles to the Market Street Bridge to direct motorists between the Downtown and West Side. Pedestrian access will still be permitted across the bridge. Wayne Couter, Sr. passed away at the age of 88

Wayne Anthony Couter, Sr. peacefully passed away in the comfort of his home on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer surrounded by his loving wife and children. Born at home on August 8, 1935, in Cumberland, Maryland, Wayne was the son of the late Howard Edwin and Eleanor Marie (Spies) Couter. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his older brother, Paul Howard Couter and niece Dena (Couter) Hammersmith. Maryland Ave CDS Arrest

On Thursday, August 1st, 2024, an officer with the Cumberland Police Department observed an equipment violation on a grey Mitsubishi passenger car. A traffic stop was initiated in the 400 block of Maryland Ave, and contact made with the operator, Christie Renee Gibson, 49, of Cumberland MD. During the course of the stop, Gibson admitted to having CDS materials in her possession. During a subsequent search, an amount of suspected methamphetamine was located on Gibson. As a result, Gibson was then placed under arrest and issued a criminal citation for the offense. After being served, Gibson was released, pending trial…

Bench Warrant Served

On Thursday, August 1st, 2024, the Cumberland Police Department arrested Garrett Lane Kniseley, 26, of Cumberland MD.  Kniseley was arrested on an active Bench Warrant issued by the Allegany County District Court on August 29th. The warrant alleged Kniseley failed to comply with and order of the court or condition of pre-trial release that stemmed from a previous case charging him with 1st and 2nd degree assault. Kniseley was taken before a District Court Commissioner for an initial appearance where he was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center. He is currently being held without bond. Free Dental and Veterinary Services Through Weekend

The Army Reserve continues its Innovative Readiness Training at the Allegany County Fairgrounds through the weekend with completely free dental and veterinary services. Dental services include cleanings, fillings and extractions, exams, and x-rays.
