Heatwave Will Continue Through Weekend

The current heat wave is expected to peak this weekend, reaching 90 to 100 degrees daily with heat indices near 105 possible through Sunday.  Brenda Caldwell, Public Information Coordinator for the Allegany County Health Department says more awareness is being put toward heat-related dangers and encourages those without air conditioning to seek out cooler locations in the hottest parts of the day…    

Violation of a protective order

On 06/18/2024 at approximately 3:00 PM an officer from the Cumberland City Police Department initiated a traffic stop on I-68 W/B prior to exit 42. During the traffic stop the officer made contact with Eric Brewington, whom was a passenger in the vehicle. The officer learned that Brewington had been served a final protective order barring him from having any contact with the operator of the vehicle. The order was confirmed to still be active and Brewington was placed under arrest.  Brewington was taken to the Allegany County Detention Center for central booking. Warrants Served

On 06/18/2024 the Cumberland City Police Department served two Arrest Warrants on Damera Davis. The warrants were issued as a result of Davis violating the terms of probation from a previous theft and disorderly conduct cases. Delegate Buckel Facing Legal Issues Again

House Minority Leader Jason Buckel has risen to the top of Republican ranks in Annapolis yet issues in Allegany County keep making headlines.  Last week, Buckel was charged with several traffic violations in a late Thursday night stop in Lavale.  The charges are DUI, driving with a suspended license, failure to display a registration card, and negligent driving.  Last June, Buckel was charged with speeding on I-68.  In 2021, two criminal harassment charges were filed by a Maryland state trooper but those charges were dropped.  Buckel is slated for a court date at District Court on July 24 before Judge…

Boswell Man Pleads Guilty In Shooting Of Father

A man who shot his father over a disagreement concerning a weed-eater has pleaded guilty to simple assault in a plea agreement in Somerset County.  In October, Mason Jack called 911 claiming he had shot his father after being followed home from his grandmother’s house where the two were doing yard work. Reports say both men drew guns and then got into a physical fight before Jack says he lost his glasses and shot his father claiming he couldn’t see clearly.

Judge Issues Injunction On Title IX Regulation

West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrissey said Monday the US District Court of Eastern Kentucky has issued a preliminary injunction against recent Title IX regulation. The Department of Education is seeking to abolish sex-based distinctions in educational activities including sports where males identifying as female would be allowed to compete in girls’ sports and use women’s bathrooms and locker rooms. States not complying would lose federal funding.

Mountain Valley Pipeline Finally In Service

West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin fought long and hard for the completion of the Mountain Valley Pipeline that spans 303 miles of West Virginia and Virginia. The project was first announced in 2014 and faced challenges on environmental and community impact.
