2024 Heritage Fund Grant to 1845 Canada Hose House

A grant from Preservation Maryland will allow the doors of the 1845 Canada Hose House on North Mechanic Street to swing open once again.  An award of $8,000 went to the Allegany County Historical Society to restore the bay doors to operating condition.  Dave Williams of the society said the doors were preserved but closed off from offices that occupied the space… Having the doors functional will allow more programming options for the Hose House and historic Blue Spring on the property and allow display of larger pieces of history…

Humbird Street Assault Arrest

On 06/17/2024 at approximately 11:30 AM the Cumberland City Police Department were dispatched to a residence in the 200 block of Humbird Street for an assault. Upon arrival officers located the victim and observed obvious injuries to their neck and body. Officers were advised the suspect Garrett Kniseley had struck the victim and strangled them. Kniseley had barricaded himself in a closet prior to officers’ arrival. Officers were able to get Kniseley to surrender and he was placed under arrest without issue. Warrants Served

On 06/17/2024 the Cumberland City Police Department served two Arrest Warrants on Gary Ray Bookheimer Jr. The warrants were issued as a result of Bookheimer failing to obey pre-trial court conditions on two separate CDS possession not cannabis charges. Bookheimer received a hearing before a District Court Commissioner and was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center without bond.   Served – Gary Ray Bookheimer Jr (60) Cumberland, MD Charges – 2 Bench Warrants for failure to comply   

Comptroller Lierman Statement on Pardons for Cannabis Convictions

Comptroller Brooke E. Lierman issued the following statement on pardons for cannabis convictions issued today by Governor Wes Moore: “I applaud Governor Moore’s executive order to pardon Marylanders previously convicted of misdemeanor possession of marijuana and paraphernalia. House Minority Leader Arrested for DUI, Other Charges

Maryland State Police arrested Maryland House Minority Leader Jason Buckel this past Thursday on charges including Driving Under the Influence and Driving on a Suspended license.  The incident took place late Thursday night on Route 40 near Campground Road. Buckel received five citations as a result of the traffic stop. City Hall Closed For Juneteenth Holiday

City Hall will be closed Wednesday, June 19th, 2024 in observance of Juneteenth, with no employees available on that day. Current regular operations of City Hall will be closed to the public, with staff resuming operations on Thursday, June 20th.  The City of Cumberland also reminds residents that trash and recycling pickup will proceed on its regular schedule. 

West Virginia Mailing Summer EBT Cards

The West Virginia Department of Human Services will begin mailing West Virginia Summer EBT benefits to eligible students on June 16, 2024. The program will provide short-term grocery benefit assistance to income-eligible households with school-age children during the summer months. Each eligible student will receive a one-time benefit of $120 on a new Summer EBT card. The online application can be found at schoolcafe.com. Applications will be accepted until August 20, 2024.

Cumberland Mayor & Council To Meet Tuesday

The Mayor and City Council of Cumberland will meet in public session beginning at 4:30 p.m. in the 2nd Floor Conference Room of the Allegany Museum (3 Pershing Street) on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, for the purpose of immediately closing the meeting to discuss matters that relate to contract negotiations with the International Association of Firefighters Local #203. Authority to close the session is provided by Section 3-305(b)(9) of the General Provisions Article of the Annotated Code of Maryland.
