On Monday, July 29, 2024 at approximately 7:28 AM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the area of N. Allegany Street and Cumberland Street for a check on well-being of a suspicious male. Police contacted the male subject, Frank Nicol Sr. who was found to be in possession of controlled dangerous substance paraphernalia. He was issued a criminal citation and released pending trial. Maryland Ninth Highest in “Housing Wage”
An “Out of Reach Report” from the National Low Income Housing Coalition shows Maryland has the ninth highest housing wage in the nation. "Housing Wage" is an estimate of the hourly wage needed to afford a rental home at fair-market rent without spending more than 30% of income. Median monthly rent for new multifamily units in the third quarter of last year was more than $1800 a month, while just 2% of new units had rents less than $850 dollars per month. Regional Tourism Conference Addresses Accessibility
Business and tourism industry professionals will be gathering at the West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and Blind on August 5 for a special summit on addressing accessibility. WVU Receives Grant For Solar/Hydrogen Research
West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin, chair of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, says a $5 million dollar research grant from the Department of Energy will be going to West Virginia University for research in solar and hydrogen technologies. Manchin said that developing such technology helps to ensure America’s energy independence. Researchers at WVU, along with NASA, aim to demonstrate using solar-thermal systems to make low-cost, clean hydrogen that could make oxygen in space along with a variety of other applications.
Jim Robey Scholarship Awarded
For the second year in a row, Cumberland resident Drake Rose has been named the recipient of the $500 WCBC Jim Robey Achievement Scholarship. Rose is in his second year of a Multimedia degree program at Allegany College of Maryland. He is also pursuing certification in both Social Media Marketing and Graphic Design. The scholarship was established for students in the media program at Allegany College in memory of long-time WCBC broadcaster Jim Robey who passed away in 2005.
Governor Justice To Speak In Morgantown

Curtis’ Coney Island Receives National Trust Grant
American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation today announced the 2024 recipients of the Backing Historic Small Restaurants grant program. 50 small restaurants in the U.S. will receive a $50,000 grant each to help them upgrade, renovate, and grow their businesses. The grant program significantly expanded its reach this year, doubling the number of grantees, including in 13 new states, and increasing the total grant funding to $2.5 million, up from $1 million in prior years. New Bay Plates Debut For Maryland Drivers
The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration has revealed an updated Maryland bay License plate. The new plate highlights protection of coastal water bays in the state. Proceeds from the license plates provide funding to communities to protect and restore natural resources through the Chesapeake Bay Trust.
