Park Street Assault Arrest
On July 28, 2024, Cumberland Police Department arrested Cheyenne Mariah Nair. Officers were dispatched to a business on Park Street for an alleged assault. Officers arrived and made contact with the victim who had visible redness to the right-side cheek and nose. The victim stated that his girlfriend had assaulted him with a closed fist. Ms. Nair was transported to the Allegany County Detention Center pending her initial appearance before a District Court Commissioner. Arrest: Cheyenne Mariah Nair, 26 years old, Cumberland Maryland. Rolling Mill Area Slowly Making Progress
Work is moving ahead on a location for a Royal Farms convenience store just off the Maryland Avenue exit of eastbound Interstate 68. The City of Cumberland planning commission okayed the final site plan recently. Morrisey Files Appeal on Reassignment Surgeries
The state of West Virginia has filed an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court regarding state Medicaid coverage of sex-reassignment surgeries. Attorney General Patrick Morrisey announced the state of West Virginia should have the option of whether or not to fund such surgeries through Medicaid. "In this particular case the state of West Virginia was sued for denying Medicaid coverage for sex reassignment surgeries. Now our state's Medicaid program made a reasonable decision to reserve scarce funding for medically necessary treatments not elective surgeries."
Tobacco Use In Middle/High School Unchanged
Nearly 60,000 students in over 300 schools took part in the Maryland Youth Tobacco Survey. It was the first time that menthol tobacco was specifically questioned. The survey results show that the use of cigarettes, tobacco, e-cigarettes, and alcohol among high schoolers remained pretty much the same as 2021, with a slight increase in cigar smoking. Competition to Stuff the Bus
County United Way has incorporated two competitions for businesses this year for their Stuff The Bus campaign for school supplies. Michele Walker, director of the United Way, says that businesses can decorate the box they set up for donations for a chance to win a tropy. Northrup Grumman Posts Second Quarter Earnings
Northrop Grumman Corporation reported second quarter 2024 sales increased seven percent to $10.2 billion dollars, as compared with $9.6 billion in the second quarter of 2023. Net earnings for the quarter totaled $940 million, as compared with $812 million in the second quarter of 2023. The company is expecting to exceed $41 billion dollars in sales by the end of the year.
Warrant and Criminal Summons Served
On July 27, 2024, the Cumberland Police Department served an Arrest Warrant on Christopher Lewis Tilson. The warrant was issued by the Allegany County Circuit Court via a Grand Jury Indictment for CDS possession. Tilson was taken before a District Court Commissioner for an initial appearance where he was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center and held without bond. Housing and Community Development Grants
Allegany, Garrett, and Washington counties have been awarded $445,000 in grants by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development. Community Health and Safety Works grants are to be used to improve the health and safety of neighborhoods through physical design improvements, operational activities, and other community strategies. Local recipients include the Garrett Arts Council, Cumberland Economic Development, and Horizon Goodwill of Washington County.
Fire at Vacant Home on Baker St.
The Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal is continuing to investigate a fire in a vacant home just before midnight Friday on Baker Street in Cumberland. Cumberland firefighters were dispatched to the residence at 720 Baker St. and found fire at the rear of the building. No injuries were reported and damages are reported to be about $1,000.
