CEDC Applying For Restore 2.0 Funding

The Cumberland Economic Development Corporation is applying for $300,000 through Maryland Housing and Community Development. The grant money from the Restore 2.0 Program enables the city to assist new businesses with start-up costs that locate in the primary business district. Traffic Stop Arrest

On June 11, 2024, An Officer of the Cumberland Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for numerous traffic violations. The Officer made contact with the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle. The Officer then requested her driver’s license and registration. The drivers stated that she did not possess her license and provided a name and date of birth. Due to the Officers observations, he requested a Police K9 to conduct a free air sniff of the vehicle. Attorney General Brown Speaks On Senior Scams

One in five senior citizens over age 65 have been the victims of fraud, losing almost $3 billion a year to identity theft and con artists.  Throughout Maryland, “Protect Week” is bringing attention to the scams that often affect the older population, coming from outside bad actors or even close family members.  Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown says his office takes these crimes seriously, and does all it can to fight back against elder fraud and abuse…    

Lottery Players Continue Big Wins Locally

Across Maryland, the Lottery paid more than $40 million in prizes during the seven-day period ending June 9, including 48 tickets worth $10,000 or more.  Locally, an Electric 8’s scratch off game sold at Parkview Liquors on Greene Street was worth $88,000. Last week, a Westernport couple won $90,000 on the Lottery’s Big Spin Wheel and another Allegany County resident won $50,000 on the Bonus Match 5 game at the end of May.

Fetterman Home After I-70 Car Crash

Pennsylvania U.S. Senator John Fetterman is back at home following a car crash over the weekend near Hancock. The crash occurred near the intersection of Interstates’ 70 and 68 when the car Fetterman was driving rear-ended another vehicle. Fetterman and his wife had a brief stay at War Memorial Hospital in Berkeley Springs where staff treated the Senator for a bruised shoulder.  On a social media post, Gisele Fetterman remarked it was the “worst anniversary ever.”  State police are continuing to investigate the crash…    

Buckel Says State Has A Spending Problem

Maryland’s Joint Republican Caucus is keeping track of the Moore Administration’s new and increased taxes and fees in a report published this week.  The report notes that since taking office in 2023, Governor Moore has been responsible for over 330 new or increased taxes and fees on everything from paint to car registrations.  House Minority Leader Jason Buckel says it’s hard for the Governor to control considering the money needed for programs he has on the table…    

West Virginia Wins Part of Talc Settlement

West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey and a coalition of 42 attorneys general reached a $700 million settlement to resolve allegations related to the marketing of Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder and body powder products that contained talc. West Virginia will receive almost $6 million dollars. The lawsuit contends that the company misled consumers about the safety and purity of some of its talc powder products. Offshore Energy Means Jobs To Governor Moore

Offshore wind projects on both coasts of the United States are ongoing in an attempt to harness wind power for energy.  Maryland, through the efforts of U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen and the White House, is set to develop two such wind farms off the coast of the Delmarva Peninsula. Allegany County Sheriff’s Office report

Allegany County Sheriff’s Office and Maryland State Police have combined resources to target open and active warrants. As a result, the following individuals have been apprehended. Tuesday, June 11, 2024 Adam Lee Shipway, 45 of Cumberland, was served two District Court warrants. An arrest warrant for Escape-2nd Degree and Obstruction of Justice and a bench warrant for Violation of Probation. Shipway is currently being held without bond in both cases.
