Open House at Carver Center Today

The Carver Center on Frederick Street will hold an open house at 1 p.m. today (Saturday).  The walk-through is part of the board's strategic planning process.

Street Work Along Industrial Blvd, Virginia Avenue Starts Monday

The City of Cumberland Engineering Department, on behalf of Excavating Associates, would like to notify the public that locations along Industrial Boulevard (near Virginia Avenue) and Virginia Avenue will be affected by overnight construction work on the week of Monday, May 20th to Friday, May 24th between the hours of 8pm to 5am each day. Traffic Control will be in place to direct vehicles around the site, during the work. The Engineering Department will issue further notification when any closures or water outages are scheduled and when traffic patterns change.

Mayor & Council To Meet Tuesday at Allegany Museum

The Mayor and City Council of Cumberland will meet in public session beginning at 5:00 p.m. in the 2nd Floor Conference Room of the Allegany Museum (3 Pershing Street) on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, for the purpose of immediately closing the meeting to discuss Board and Commission appointments and to discuss the evaluation of an appointed official.  Authority to close the session is provided by Section 3-305(b)(1)(i) of the General Provisions Article of the Annotated Code of Maryland.  The Open Work Session will then begin at 5:30 p.m. in the second floor conference room. City Police Report for Saturday

Friday May 17, 2024                                Criminal Citation Issued      On May 17, 2024, an Officer of the Cumberland Police Department conducted a traffic stop after observing a traffic violation. The Officer then made contact with the driver and passenger. Based on their conversations the Officer requested a Cumberland Police Department K9 Officer and his partner to respond. The Officer then utilized his K9 to conducted a free air sniff of the exterior of the vehicle which resulted in a Positive alert. Water Service Interruption Planned for South Cumberland today

On Saturday, May 18, 2024, at 11:00 pm until Sunday, May 19, 2024, at 7:00 am, ALL residents below the Virginia Avenue underpass to the Wiley Ford bridge will experience an interruption of water service for a valve replacement. There will be a change in traffic pattern and traffic control will be in place.

Allegany County Public Schools will hold graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2024 on Saturday, May 18, 2024. Ty Johnson Football Camp at Bishop Walsh Saturday

The third annual Ty Johnson Football Skills Camp will be held at Brother Stephen F. Paul Spartan Stadium at Bishop Walsh Saturday morning.  Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the camp runs until 12:30 p.m.  The camp is for children ages 8-13.  Concessions will be available. Johnson has now played five years in the NFL with the Lions, Jets, and Bills.  He starred at Fort Hill High School and the University of Maryland before being drafted by the Lions in 2019.

Paul Skenes Sizzles with Six No-Hit Innings for Bucs

The Pittsburgh Pirates downed the Chicago Cubs, 9-3, Friday afternoon in a game broadcast by WCBC Radio.  Rookie Paul Skenes threw six innings of no-hit ball, striking out 11, the most ever by a Pirate pitcher at Wrigley Field, which opened in 1916.

County & Union Officials Meet Over EMS Budget Cuts

The Firefighters Union and Allegany County government officials met Friday to discuss options to avoid a $2 million dollar budget cut to county emergency services. A statement from the Allegany County Commissioners said a productive meeting  produced various scenarios which are being evaluated to develop a plan that works within a constrained budget. WCBC has learned that those on each side of the issue are giving a little to find middle ground and that at this time no station closures are planned.  There will be a vote by union members on Monday morning on suggested solutions.
