Governor Aruna Miller will visit Bel Air Elementary School to participate in a book reading to students with Cumberland-native, Hannah Smith who is the author of five books that have been sold with global recognition. Wishart, Schauman Earn PR’s in Track & Field’s Final Outdoor Meet of Season

Frostburg State Track & Field program competed in its final meet of the outdoor season, the Lee Last Chance Invitational. With a handful of Bobcats making the trip down South, freshmen Emily Wishart and Hannah Schauman both used the opportunity to secure personal bests on the day, with the former setting the eighth-fastest 1,500 meters in program history at 4:58.95, while the latter ran a 12:08.92 for the third-best 3,000-meter steeplechase in school history. Among the top-10 placers on the day, junior Tom McCoy took fourth in the pole vault at 4.82m, while sophomore Khady Ndiaye had an 11.28m in the triple…

Moore Attends Ribbon-Cutting in Hagerstown

Maryland Governor Wes Moore attended the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Conair Distribution Center in Hagerstown on Friday afternoon.  The new distribution center, first announced in October, 2023, is the largest distribution center in the Mid-Atlantic region, with 700 new jobs expected to be created.

Skenes to make MLB Debut

Pittsburgh Pirates rookie pitching sensation Paul Skenes will make his Major League debut on Saturday, as the Pirates host the Cubs at 4:05 pm.  Skenes was the number one draft choice for the Pirates in 2023, previously pitching at the Air Force Academy and LSU.  Starting this season at AAA Indianapolis, Skenes has a 0.99 ERA with 45 strikeouts in 27 1/3 innings of work.

Arrest Warrant Served for April Incident

On Friday, May 10, 2024, the Cumberland Police Department served an arrest warrant on Amber Westfall.  The warrant was issued as the result of an incident that occurred on April 30, 2024.  On this date at approximately 11:00 AM, an officer of the Cumberland Police Department observed Amber Westfall in the area of Virginia Avenue.  The officer confirmed that Westfall had active warrants for her arrest.  When the officer contacted her and informed her that she had warrants, Westfall fled on foot.  The officer initiated a foot pursuit and was able to take her into custody.  A search of Westfall’s…

Hit and Run on Ascension Street

On Friday, May 10, 2024 at approximately 8:35 PM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the 400 block of Ascension Street for the report of a hit & run.  Officers learned that the victim was riding a bicycle in the area of Spring Street and Maryland Avenue when they were struck by a vehicle. The vehicle then left the area.  The victim was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Anyone with any information regarding this incident is encouraged to call the Cumberland Police Department at 301-777-1600 or the Allegany-Mineral County Crimesolvers at 877-722-4307.  Callers can remain anonymous.

Day of Caring and Sharing Wrap Up

Friday's chilly and damp weather didn't stop 520 volunteers from tackling 52 projects throughout the community. The 27th annual County United Way Day of Caring and Sharing brings the community together to clean up and revitalize parks and roadways across the county. Morrisey Co-Leading Lawsuit Against U.S. Environment Protection Agency

West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey is co-leading 25 states in a lawsuit asking the U.S. Court of Appeals declare unlawful the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s new rule on existing coal-, natural gas- and oil-fired power plants. The rule forces plants fueled by coal or natural gas to capture smokestack emissions or shut down. AG Morrisey said that Congress hasn’t given EPA clear authorization to remake the electricity grids. He says the EPA cannot sidestep Congress to exercise regulatory power that would radically transform the nation’s energy grids, forcing states to shift energy portfolios away from fossil fuel-fired generation.

Garden Club of Cumberland will hold its May 13th meeting

Monday, May 13, at 6 P.M. the Garden Club of Cumberland will hold its May general meeting at Allegany College of Maryland Continuing Education Building.  The program "The Small Stuff " will be presented by speaker Marta Fiscus. Fiscus specializes in macro photography. She has earned many awards and recognitions for her expertise. Ray Shipley will speak and give advice on horticulture entries for the Allegany County Fair and Ag Expo.  The public is invited to attend.
