Democratic Candidates Experiencing Rough Couple Days
The two leading candidates on the Democrat’s ticket for U.S. Senate have not had a good few days. First, David Trone fell ill with a stomach infection. Now, the campaign headquarters of Angela Alsobrooks has suffered a break-in. Her Silver Spring offices were entered sometime Thursday and personal items were stolen and a campaign notebook with sensitive information was found open. The campaign is planning to install security cameras.
Fair Housing Month Proclaimed
David Nedved, of Allegany County’s Economic and Community Development, shared a proclamation on April being celebrated as Fair Housing Month. Nedved read the proclamation that states people are protected from discrimination when buying or renting a home, getting a mortgage, or housing assistance… Assistant Attorney General Pamela Karlan says the Department of Justice celebrates the years of their work with housing authorities to prevent discrimination…
Passages of the Western Potomac Heritage Area Announced Mini-Grants
Passages of the Western Potomac Heritage area recently announced three mini-grants awarded to local non-profits. The new Wills Creek Museum that opens at the end of month received $4,000. Emmanuel Episcopal Church was awarded $2,875 for a production of Handel’s Messiah, and the Allegany County Historical Society received $5,000 for a living history area at Fort Cumberland during Heritage Days in September. Kim Folk, Passages Marketing Director, said the mini-grants are a great way for smaller groups to become familiar with the process of grant-writing… A workshop is available to view on the heritage area’s website at passagesofthepotomac.org.
Hampshire County Sheriff’s Department Investigating a Shooting
The Hampshire County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a shooting that took place on Sunday. Deputies responded to Dunmore Ridge Road where they discovered a male victim who had driven himself there after being shot at an undisclosed location. The Sheriff’s office says this is an isolated incident and an investigation is continuing.
Maryland General Assembly Passes Bill Impacting Pimlico Race Track
The last hours of the Maryland General Assembly, saw lawmakers pass a bill putting Pimlico Race Track in the state’s hands while making an investment of $400 million dollars designed to rebuild the home of the Preakness Stakes along with Maryland’s horseracing industry. On Tuesday, April 9, 2024, the Cumberland Police Department served a bench warrant on Brittany Lantz. The warrant was issued as the result of Lantz failing to appear in court. She was originally charged with Theft less than $100. Lantz was arrested and transported to Central Booking. She was later seen by a District Court Commissioner and remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center on a $500 bond. SHA Encourages Drivers to Use On-Line Map to Avoid FSK Bridge
Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration is encouraging highway users to use its real-time traffic map to plan routes in light of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse last month. The map enables users to see real-time information such as traffic volumes, live cameras, and any incidents on the state highway system. The map can be accessed by clicking the Interactive Map icon at https://chart.maryland.gov/. The State Highway Administration urges drivers to bookmark the link and view before venturing out onto the highway system.
