WVDOH highway worker recovering after being hit by car in work zone

A West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH) worker was treated and released from the hospital after being hit by a car while patching potholes on Interstate 79 in Braxton County on Friday, March 29, 2024. “There would be far fewer accidents if drivers would pay attention and obey the law in work zones,” said West Virginia Transportation Secretary Jimmy Wriston, P.E. “This incident could have been far, far worse.”   The WVDOH District 7 worker was patching potholes on I-79 when a driver ran through the work zone, drove through the pothole that was being patched and struck the worker…

State Board of Elections Announces Nearly 600,000 Voters Requested Mail-In Ballots Ahead of 2024 Presidential Primary Election

The State Board of Elections (SBE) is pleased to announce that nearly 600,000 voters have already requested a mail-in ballot for the upcoming Presidential Primary Election. This represents almost the same amount of requested mail-in ballots from the 2022 General Election. SBE anticipates the demand for requests to exceed the 2022 General Election and for the 2024 Presidential Primary Election to be the highest mail-in ballot election in Maryland’s history in a non-COVID year. Williams Reaches 100 Wins, Offense Bashes 43 Runs in Baseball Sweep of WVWC

Frostburg State Baseball team used their powerhouse offense to sweep West Virginia Wesleyan at home on Friday afternoon by final scores of 22-5 and 21-3. Junior Jacob McDonald got the nod to start game one, stranding one runner on base for WVWC in the top of the first. WV Highways Win Safety Award

The West Virginia Division of Highways has been recognized for its commitment to safety.  Recently, Encova Insurance presented the department with a safety recognition award for 2023. WVDOH was one agency selected out of 22 states for the award based on a reduction of injuries in the workplace, increased return-to-work activity and improvement in timely reporting.  “This is the most important thing we do,” said Secretary of Transportation Jimmy Wriston. “This is the biggest commitment that we make as a department is to keep our workers safe. To do what we do with zero incidents.”

Overnight Work on I-68E Near Hancock Planned

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will perform patching and paving work on eastbound I-68 at the Creek Road Bridge for one night, Tuesday, April 2 at 7 p.m. All lanes should be reopened by 5 a.m., April 3, weather permitting. A detour route will require drivers to take Exit 77 through Hancock and then enter onto I-70 east.  Triton Construction will use variable message signs, cones, drums, and temporary traffic signs to guide motorists through the work zone.

Yale Street Assault Arrest

On Wednesday March 27th, 2024 at approximately 6:08 PM officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the 600 block of Yale Street for a reported assault. Upon officer’s arrival they spoke with all parties involved. When officers spoke with victim, they alleged that they were engaged in an argument with Christopher Butler, and that he began to strangle them. Officers were able to observe evidence of the alleged assault and Christopher was placed under arrest. He was later taken before a District Court Commissioner where he was held without bond.
