Workzone Safety Group Presents Recommendations

The State of Maryland has announced recommendations to improve safety on Maryland roadways, especially in work zones.  The Work Zone Safety Group, under the direction of Lt. Governor Aruna Miller, has developed the guidelines thrugh surveys with the public, law enforcement, and roadway workers. Lt. Republicans Want to Address Juvenile Crime

Downtown Discounts Available

Shopping downtown Cumberland for the holidays can be a little easier with the new discount card being offered through the Downtown Development Commission.  The cards are $5 and include discounts from over 30 downtown businesses.  The cards are available at WCBC, the Downtown Development Commission at City Hall, and will also be available at the Winter Market on December 2 and 9 at Canal Place.  

CRIMINAL SUMMONS SERVED

On Monday, November 20, 2023, the Cumberland Police Department served a criminal summons on Aubrey Strachan.  The summons was issued as the result of an incident that occurred on November 8, 2023.  On this date at approximately 5:54 PM, police responded to a business on Queen City Drive for a shoplifter.  The officer contacted the employee who reported that Aubrey Strachan stole merchandise from the store.  Strachan had already left the area.  After further investigation, police filed for charges against Strachan at the District Court of Allegany County.  Strachan signed for her copy of the summons and she was released…

BENCH WARRANT SERVED

On Monday, November 20, 2023, the Cumberland Police Department served a Circuit Court bench warrant on Steven Horn.  The warrant was issued as the result of Horn violating Pre-Trial Release.  He was originally charged with Driving While Impaired by Alcohol.  Horn was arrested and transported to the Allegany County Detention Center where he is currently being held without bond pending his initial appearance before the court. Frostburg State University Closed on Tuesday

Out of an abundance of caution, Frostburg State University will be CLOSED on Tuesday, Nov. 21, due to the possibility of inclement weather. Essential personnel should report to work as scheduled. Normally we would wait to announce a delay or closure but given the information we have at this time and the start of the holiday break, we would like to make sure that our students, faculty and staff have the opportunity to start their travel early and safely.

State Launches Apprenticeship Programs

Governor Moore and the Maryland Department of Labor have announced new programs coinciding with National Apprenticeship Week. The Public Sector Registered Apprenticeship Program is a $3million initiative to create opportunities within state and local governments and provide career pathways and retention strategies.  The Maryland Hospitality Management Apprenticeship Program will create a pipeline to an associate’s degree through one of six community colleges. The programs are supported through a grant from the US Department of Labor.
