Ty Johnson Football Camp at Bishop Walsh Saturday
The third annual Ty Johnson Football Skills Camp will be held at Brother Stephen F. Paul Spartan Stadium at Bishop Walsh Saturday morning. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the camp runs until 12:30 p.m. The camp is for children ages 8-13. Concessions will be available. Johnson has now played five years in the NFL with the Lions, Jets, and Bills. He starred at Fort Hill High School and the University of Maryland before being drafted by the Lions in 2019.
Paul Skenes Sizzles with Six No-Hit Innings for Bucs
The Pittsburgh Pirates downed the Chicago Cubs, 9-3, Friday afternoon in a game broadcast by WCBC Radio. Rookie Paul Skenes threw six innings of no-hit ball, striking out 11, the most ever by a Pirate pitcher at Wrigley Field, which opened in 1916.
County & Union Officials Meet Over EMS Budget Cuts
The Firefighters Union and Allegany County government officials met Friday to discuss options to avoid a $2 million dollar budget cut to county emergency services. A statement from the Allegany County Commissioners said a productive meeting produced various scenarios which are being evaluated to develop a plan that works within a constrained budget. WCBC has learned that those on each side of the issue are giving a little to find middle ground and that at this time no station closures are planned. There will be a vote by union members on Monday morning on suggested solutions.
Reminder – Water Line Work Saturday for South Cumberland
On Saturday, May 18, 2024, at 11:00 pm until Sunday, May 19, 2024, at 7:00 am, ALL residents below the Virginia Avenue underpass to the Wiley Ford bridge will experience an interruption of water service for a valve replacement. There will be a change in traffic pattern and traffic control will be in place.
Replacement of US522 Bridge over I-70 Will Cause Nightly Detours
Highway work starting Monday, May 20 will have overnight detours in a heavily used area near Hancock. Maryland is beginning work to replace the US 522 bridge over I-70 and will be installing concrete barrier walls. Detours around the construction set-up will start at 8pm in the evening and last until 6am and last for about 5 days. Drivers should use caution in the area and watch for workers and signage for the detours. The bridge work should be complete in 2025, weather permitting.
Graduation Dates and Times Set by ACPS
Allegany County Public Schools will hold graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2024 on Saturday, May 18. Times and locations for each ceremony will be 9am at Greenway Avenue Stadium for Fort Hill, Noon in the school gymnasium for Allegany High School, 4pm at the stadium for Mountain Ridge, and 6pm at Canal Place for the Career Center. Options to view the graduations online can be accessed on the Allegany County Public Schools website.
CRIMINAL SUMMONS SERVED
On Thursday, May 16, 2024, the Cumberland Police Department served a criminal summons on Cristina Moore. The summons was issued as the result of a private citizen filing for charges against Moore at the District Court of Allegany County. Moore signed for her copy of the summons and she was released pending trial. ARRESTED: Cristina Dawn Moore AGE: 30 Cumberland, MD CHARGES: Assault-2nd Degree, Peace Order: Fail to Comply (x2), Disorderly Conduct (x2), Disturb Peace-Loud Noise, Harass; A Course of Conduct (x2).
CDS ARREST, BENCH WARRANT & CRIMINAL SUMMONS SERVED
On Thursday, May 16, 2024, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the area of Park Street and S. Central Avenue for a suspicious subject who was later identified as Brian Simmons Jr. It was reported to the police that Simmons was in possession of a firearm. Officers located Simmons in the 700 block of Maryland Avenue at which time he fled on foot. Officers then engaged in a short foot pursuit. A new general surgery practice at the UPMC Western Maryland Medical Arts Center brings together familiar faces of longtime area providers Drs. Michael Stasko, Milton Lum, Roy Chisholm, and Physician Assistant Wendi Shillingburg. Dr. Hannah Schrift, and Michael Schrift, CRNP are new to the community.
