Election Judges Needed – Paid Position

National Voter Registration Day was recognized this week encouraging voters to make sure they’re ready to vote in advance of next year’s presidential primaries.  Locally, the Allegany County Board of Elections held a drive at Frostburg State University to register voters.  One of the main resources needed each election is election poll workers.  Election judges work at each polling site to check in voters, answer questions and monitor activities.  Diane Loibel, Elections Administrator, tells WCBC that most people don’t realize the Election Judge position is paid… Citizens interested in becoming Election poll workers are encouraged to contact the local board…

Governor Moore Speaks At Global Initiative

Allegany County Sheriff Office serve Arrest Warrant

Ricky Rodell Brunson, 56 of Spring Lake, North Carolina, was extradited from Harnett County due to a District Court Arrest Warrant from 2015 where he was charged with: felony Theft: $1,000 To Under $10,000, Theft: Less $1,000 Value and Malicious Destruction of Property Valued more than $1,000. He is being held at the Allegany County Detention Center pending a bail review after the Commissioner set his bond at $2,000 at his initial appearance.

Criminal Summons and Arrest Warrant Served

On September 19, 2023 Officers of the Cumberland Police Department served an Arrest Warrant on Austin Russell Hall. The arrest warrant was Issued by the Circuit Court of Allegany County for violation of probation. Hall was transported to the Allegany County Detention Center and was held without bond. Arrest: Austin Russell Hall, age 27, Ridgeley West Virginia. Charges: (2) CDS Possession with intent to deliver narcotic, (2) CDS possession not cannabis, CDS possession of paraphernalia and Burglary 4th degree. Manchin Weighs In On National Debt

The United States has reached a gross national debt of $33 Trillion dollars.  Congress is now facing a September 30th deadline to pass another spending measure or face another threat of a government shut-down.  West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin spoke to CNBC about the situation and says its time the country got its financial house in order…

PA Leaders Pledge Help For Suicides

Pennsylvania’s Department of Health and Human Services recognized Suicide Prevention Awareness month with a gathering at the capitol in Harrisburg.  DHS Secretary Dr. Val Arkoosh said that the state is committed to providing resources, programs and people to combat suicides in Pennsylvania… Pennsylvania’s Secretary of Aging, Jason Kavulich keyed on the issue of suicide among older Pennsylvanians.  He wants to make sure that seniors are not left out of the loop in programs and resources…  

Fall Brings Colors, Travel Opportunities

Marylanders Can Vote at 16 In Some Areas

In November, voters in Rockville can participate in a non-binding referendum on lowering the voting age to 16. Alyssa Canty with Common Cause says at this age, young people are often beginning to see the impact of civic policy. Maryland state law permits city councils to lower the voting age at the local level, and so far five cities in Maryland have done so. In Somerset, Maryland in Montgomery County, 16-year-olds will be able to vote in local elections beginning next May.  Canty sees late high school as a good time to engage young people.

Child Passenger Safety Week

Child Passenger Safety Week is in progress across the state.  The week is dedicated to helping to educate parents, grandparents, and caregivers about the importance of choosing and installing car seats, booster seats and seat belts.
