Hit and Run on Ascension Street

On Friday, May 10, 2024 at approximately 8:35 PM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the 400 block of Ascension Street for the report of a hit & run.  Officers learned that the victim was riding a bicycle in the area of Spring Street and Maryland Avenue when they were struck by a vehicle. The vehicle then left the area.  The victim was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Anyone with any information regarding this incident is encouraged to call the Cumberland Police Department at 301-777-1600 or the Allegany-Mineral County Crimesolvers at 877-722-4307.  Callers can remain anonymous.

Day of Caring and Sharing Wrap Up

Friday's chilly and damp weather didn't stop 520 volunteers from tackling 52 projects throughout the community. The 27th annual County United Way Day of Caring and Sharing brings the community together to clean up and revitalize parks and roadways across the county. Morrisey Co-Leading Lawsuit Against U.S. Environment Protection Agency

West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey is co-leading 25 states in a lawsuit asking the U.S. Court of Appeals declare unlawful the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s new rule on existing coal-, natural gas- and oil-fired power plants. The rule forces plants fueled by coal or natural gas to capture smokestack emissions or shut down. AG Morrisey said that Congress hasn’t given EPA clear authorization to remake the electricity grids. He says the EPA cannot sidestep Congress to exercise regulatory power that would radically transform the nation’s energy grids, forcing states to shift energy portfolios away from fossil fuel-fired generation.

Garden Club of Cumberland will hold its May 13th meeting

Monday, May 13, at 6 P.M. the Garden Club of Cumberland will hold its May general meeting at Allegany College of Maryland Continuing Education Building.  The program "The Small Stuff " will be presented by speaker Marta Fiscus. Fiscus specializes in macro photography. She has earned many awards and recognitions for her expertise. Ray Shipley will speak and give advice on horticulture entries for the Allegany County Fair and Ag Expo.  The public is invited to attend.    

Driving Under the Influence Arrest

On Thursday May 9th, 2024 at approximately 11:55 pm an officer of the Cumberland Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that had traveled the wrong way on Centre Street, which is a one-way street. The officer contacted the operator, Lori Zehfuss, and observed evidence of impairment. After the performance of Standardized Field Sobriety further evidence of impairment was observed. Zehfuss was subsequently placed under arrest and later released on driving under the influence related citations.   Arrest: Lori Zehfuss, age 55, Baltimore Maryland. Charges: Driving Under 

Disorderly Conduct and Obstructing and Hindering

On Thursday May 9th, 2024 at approximately 11:19 am officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a business in the 700 block of Park Street for a reported disturbance. Upon officer’s arrival they spoke with an employee who indicated a female and been creating a disturbance and soliciting on the property. A description was provided and officers were able to locate a female matching the description. Officer’s attempted to identify her due to her involvement in the incident and she refused to identify herself. She was subsequently placed under arrest and later identified as Damera Davis. Arrest Warrant Served

On Thursday May 9th, 2024 officers of the Cumberland Police Department served two Arrest Warrants on Isaac Case. The Arrest Warrants were issued by the District Court when he violated the conditions of his probation on two different cases. Case was taken before a District Court Commissioner where he was held without bond. Arrest: Isaac Case, age 23, Cumberland Maryland. Charges: Two Counts of Violation of Probation.

Mayor Morriss Comments on Downtown Project

Prescription Drug Coverage To End

Maryland state retirees are scrambling to figure out what to do about prescription drug coverage that will be ending in December.  Moves by the General Assembly in 2009 to balance the budget resulted in the state dropping the prescription coverage.  Senator Mike McKay had submitted a bill to reinstate the coverage, but it did not make it out of committee.  He’s not sure about another bill happening…   McKay says the retirees should start making plans about what to do before the end of the summer…
