Widow of Charlie Lattimer Dies at Age 89
Donna Lee Lattimer, the widow of Charlie Lattimer and mother of Barry Lattimer, died Wednesday at the age of 89. Mrs. Lattimer holds the rare distinction of being related to two Fort Hill football coaches who served a total of 29 years as head coach. Mrs. Lattimer is survived by son, Barry, and daughter, Kim. Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home Monday from 4-7 p.m.
Police Short-Staffed in K-9s
The City of Cumberland’s Police Force is fully staffed right now, but some officers have let Chief Ternent know they are looking at other employment opportunities where higher salaries and benefits are attractive to the younger officers. USPS Readying For Holiday Rush
The United States Postal Service is gearing up for the holidays with a number of investments in its services. This year USPS will have no holiday demand surcharges this year in an attempt to position itself as the most affordable delivery provider. The Postal Service is also hiring 10,000 seasonal employees along with increasing daily processing capacity to 70 million pieces of mail and moving 95% of its volume via an improved ground transportation system. The investments are all part of the postal service’s “Delivering for America” strategic plan.
Park Street Theft & CDS Arrest
On 9/20/2023 at approximately 7:30 PM an officer from the Cumberland City Police Department observed a traffic violation on Park Street. The officer conducted a traffic stop and contacted the operator Shawna Hamlette. Hamlette was wanted out Washington County, MD for a theft charge. Upon arrest a suspected Percocet pill was located on Hamlette. Upon further investigation into the traffic stop the officer found the validation tab being displayed on the vehicle had been reported stolen from Baltimore, MD. Hamlette was placed under arrest and transported to the Allegany County Detention Center. Hamlette was seen by a District Court Commissioner…
Fayette Street Arrest
On 09/20/2023 at approximately 7:45 PM the Cumberland City Police were dispatched to the 400 block of Fayette Street for a disturbance. Upon arrival officers learned that Samantha Smith had assaulted a subject on scene. Officers were able to observe minor injuries on the victim. Smith was placed under arrest and into a police vehicle after a brief struggle. Smith was transported to the Allegany County Detention Center for central booking. Warrant Served
On 09/20/2023 the Cumberland City Police served an Arrest Warrant on Cody Horwath. The warrant was issued when Horwath violated his probation from a previous CDS possession not marijuana charge. Horwath was seen by a District Court Commissioner and remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center without bond. Mayor Frustrated Over Rolling Mill
Voicing his frustration publicly, Cumberland’s Mayor Ray Morriss was on the WCBC morning show Wednesday and spoke about the Rolling Mill development issues. The plot of land between I-68 and Williams Street has not been touched for months and a building sits on the site unfinished. Mayor Morriss says the time has come now for the developer to do something or get out of the way… The land for the Cumberland Gateway project is owned by Kline Scott Visco Commercial Real Estate in Frederick, Maryland.
West Virginia Settles with ResCare
West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrissey says his office has reached a settlement agreement with ResCare Inc. for over $500,000 following an investigation by the state’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit. ResCare provides home and community based health services throughout West Virginia. The investigation determined that ResCare submitted claims for payment to West Virginia Medicaid that were unsupported by documentation, disallowed, or in excess of the amount supported. ResCare is implementing new record keeping systems that they believe will comply with state requirements.
Amazon Hiring in Hagerstown
Amazon is planning on making some job-hunters in Maryland happy for the holidays. The company announced that they will be hiring 9,000 employees for their Maryland operations in a range of roles including packing, picking, sorting, and shipping. Nationwide, Amazon is planning on hiring 250,000 for the holiday rush. Jim Lebenthal, partner at Cerity Partners told CNBC that these large hires at Amazon and other large retailers bode well for the economy… Amazon is planning on hiring more than 650 employees for their Hagerstown operation.
Chief’s Focus Is Keeping/Recruiting Good Officers
Cumberland’s City Police is at full force for the time being, but keeping and recruiting good officers is a concern to Chief Chuck Ternent.
