Possible Restructuring of Downtown Development Commission
In addition to the actual construction going on downtown, there is also talk about the restructuring of what’s presently known as the Downtown Development Commission. The City has recently received the accreditation needed for the downtown to become a National Main Street area. Bench Warrants Served
On Wednesday, April 24th, 2024, the Cumberland City Police arrested Shenay Symone Hughson, 33, of Cumberland MD. Hughson was arrested on two active Bench Warrants issued by the Allegany County District Court on April 23rd. Both warrants allege Hughson failed to appear in District Court on that date for separate cases where she was charged with disorderly conduct and theft. She was taken before a District Court Commissioner for an Initial Appearance where she was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center. She is currently being held on a total of $1,000 bond. Yesterday’s forecast high by WCBC's Finckle Weather forecasters had our area reaching almost 90 degrees. But is that a record? According to weather records, the highest temperature reached this time of year was 97 degrees in April of 1941. The average temperature this month has hovered around 72 degrees. The WCBC Finckle forecast calls for highs in the 80s through mid-week.
VA Expanding Oncology Services
The Veterans Administration is expanding its oncology services for veterans across the country. In conjunction with the Biden Cancer Moonshot, an effort to speed progress in cancer research, the VA’s new Close To Me Cancer Care will bring new services to 9000 additional Veterans per year. Hagerstown Police Investigating Homicide
On Sunday, Officers of the Hagerstown Police Department were asked to check on the welfare of an individual in the 400 block of McDowell Ave. On arrival at the residence, officers discovered an apparent homicide victim, later identified as 57 year old Renee Shoemaker. Criminal Investigators and Forensic Crime Scene Investigators believed it was a domestic related homicide and later Sunday, Cleo Brown was taken into custody in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He is awaiting extradition to Maryland.
Afib On the Rise in People Under Age 65
A new study done by the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute in Pittsburgh finds that atrial fibrillation or Afib, is on the rise in people under the age of 65 and can be more dangerous than previously thought. The study found younger patients with Afib have been seen more often in recent years and also had high rates of heart disease risk factors including obesity, smoking, and high blood pressure. A Boeing Company Has Expanded Manufacturing into Bridgeport
Aurora Flight Sciences, a Boeing company, has expanded its advanced manufacturing facility in Bridgeport, West Virginia. The expansion adds almost 50,000 square feet to the facility and will add up to 100 new jobs. Aurora produces composite components and assemblies for the aerospace industry, and builds advanced unmanned aircraft. City Hall Closed Again Today
Cumberland’s City Hall is closed today due to extreme construction noise inside the building. Staff is on site and available by phone and email. Tax and Utility customers can make payments online, by using the drop box at City Hall or drive-by box next to the Chamber of Commerce, or with a credit card by calling 844-984-0459. Citizens who require in-person assistance with their payment may visit the Tax and Utility Department, which has been temporarily relocated to 446 N. Mechanic Street, inside the Willetts Building.
West Virginia Early Voting Locations
West Virginia early voting for the 2024 Primary Election will be conducted in all 55 counties from Wednesday, May 1, through Saturday, May 11. All counties will offer early voting at the county courthouse or additional voting locations. In Mineral County, voting is available at the Courthouse on Armstrong Street in Keyser. In Hampshire County, voting is at the Courthouse in Romney or at Old Capon Bridge Middle School.
