Inmate Death on Eastern Shore

Maryland State Police are investigating the death of a prison inmate in Somerset County on the Eastern Shore.  State police said correctional officers found Donyell Cornell Morris, 24, unresponsive in his cell Sunday evening.  Another prisoner is the prime suspect in the murder investigation.

Crowds Down in Ocean City

Crowds are lagging at Ocean City for Labor Day weekend.  Business owners cite a variety of possible factors, including a hangover from Hurricane Erin, cool beach temperatures with wind, and possibly inflation. 

West Virginians Have Economic Concerns

This Labor Day, West Virginians have growing economic concerns.  According to the most recent edition of the MetroNews West Virginia Poll, 29% of respondents say the economy is improving, 37% say it is about the same and 35% say it is getting worse.

TRESPASSING ARREST

On Sunday, August 31, 2025 at approximately 10:25 AM, an officer of the Cumberland Police Department was patrolling the first block of Greene Street when he observed Roger Darr sleeping in an area marked as “No Trespassing”. Darr was placed under arrest for trespassing and transported to police headquarters.   He was issued a criminal citation and released pending trial. AG. Brown Prevents $184 Million Cut to AmeriCorps Service Programs

Attorney General Anthony Brown prevailed in preserving funding for AmeriCorps, the federal agency for national service and volunteerism. The White House Office of Management and Budget’s agreed to release over $184 million in funding AmeriCorps plans to award to service programs across the country.  On July 23, Attorney General Brown co-led a coalition in filing an amended lawsuit challenging OMB’s attempt to gut AmeriCorps programs. When their response for these actions was due in Court, OMB and AmeriCorps instead agreed to fully release the previously withheld funds. “This is a major victory for Maryland’s most vulnerable and the AmeriCorps members who serve them,”…

Columbia Avenue Assault Arrest

On Sunday, August 31, 2025 at approximately 2:56 AM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to a residence in the 600 block of Columbia Avenue for an assault. Police contacted the alleged victim who reported that she was assaulted by Andrew Riggs. Riggs had already fled the area. Officers observed that the victim had sustained injuries. Police located Riggs at the intersection of Fairview Avenue and Franklin Street where he provided officers with false identifying information. Riggs was placed under arrest and transported to Central Booking. He was later seen by a District Court Commissioner and remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center without…

Labor Day Kicks Off Sports All Week On WCBC AM and FM

The end of summer means the beginning of local high school football on WCBC. Friday brings the first home game for the Allegany Campers, live at 5:30pm while Frankfort against Hampshire on Classic Hits 107 pregame at 6 and kick off at 7pm. Saturday Morning Quarterback makes its season debut at 9am on WCBC and that evening Fort Hill’s football season starts against Northern, pregame at 5:30pm kick off at 6:30pm.

Allegany College Volleyball Opens September 3

The Allegany College of Maryland Lady Trojan volleyball team is ready to start their new season this week with a home opener.  Head coach Joseph Brewer leads the Trojans, now in his fourth season, and assistant coach Lindsey Fisher.  This year’s team includes two returning players and six recruits from local high schools Allegany, Bishop Walsh, Calvary Christian, Fort Hill, and Mountain Ridge.  The season opens this Wednesday at 6pm against the Community College of Beaver County.
