Residential fire in Keyser send people to hospitals
Residential fire on Fort Ave in Keyser sent a number of people to hospitals Saturday. Keyes Police Department arrived on scene and advised working structure fire with entrapment. Fire Captain Keyes immediately requested a 2nd alarm assignment due to the entrapment and the column of smoke seen. 5 ambulances from Valley Medical Transport and Maryland State Police Trooper 5 provided transportation to regional hospitals. State Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the fire. Foxes Pizza Den and residents provided food and water to responders.
Gov Moore warns Maryland’s economy hasn’t kept pace with his ambition

The Maryland State Police McHenry Barrack is asking for the publics assistance in reference to an investigation of a burglary and destruction of property that took place in Grantsville, Garrett County, Maryland. On 8/19/23 Troopers from the McHenry Barrack responded to the 100 block of Meadowview Drive, Grantsville, Garrett County, Maryland, in reference to a burglary complaint. Upon arriving Troopers made contact with the complainant who advised that a door to the residence had been forcibly opened to gain entrance. The summons was issued as the result of a private citizen filing for charges against Swauger at the District Court of Allegany County. On Saturday, August 19, 2023, the Cumberland Police Department served two bench warrants on Kevin Bailey. Both warrants were issued as the result of Bailey violating his probation. In one case, he was originally charged with Burglary-4th Degree-Dwelling. In the other case, he was originally charged with False Statement to Officer. Fraud Arrest Made by Maryland State Police
On August 16, Pennsylvania State Police responded to a report of theft in Elk Lick Township in Somerset County, PA. Upon investigation, officers determined an unidentified male suspect had entered the First Peoples Community Federal Credit Union in Cumberland, MD, impersonated the victim’s husband and obtained multiple checks and cash withdrawals in excess of $20,000. On August 17th, the same male suspect was arrested by Maryland State Police while attempting a similar theft at a nearby branch of First Peoples' Community Federal Credit Union. The incident remains under investigation by multiple agencies.
Maryland Launches “Maryland Serves” Application Portal
Maryland Governor Wes Moore announced the launch of the Maryland Serves application portal on August 14th, offering a pathway to new service opportunities, especially for recent high school graduates. Downtown Construction Making Progress
The ongoing construction in Downtown Cumberland is making progress. In the past two weeks, new water service and fire suppression lines, as well as fiber conduits and sanitary sewer service lines were installed into buildings in the western block of Baltimore St. New fire hydrants and yard hydrants were also installed in the area. As construction continues, the Downtown Development Commission encourages all residents to stay patient as updates are made.
Assault Arrest Made on Virginia Avenue
On Friday, August 18, 2023 at approximately 6:25 PM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the first block of Virginia Avenue for an assault. Officers arrived and contacted the alleged victim who reported that she was assaulted by Trent Burnett. The victim had sustained injuries consistent with her statements. During the investigation, Burnett was uncooperative and refused to listen officers orders. Burnett was placed under arrest and transported to Central Booking.
