Howard Street Hit & Run Crash Leads to a Number of Charges
On Thursday, December 21st, 2023, The Cumberland City Police responded to the area of Howard St for the report of a hit & run crash. Upon arrival, officers contacted the victim in the incident. They advised officers that their vehicle had been struck in the rear end by a black Nissan as they were sitting at a red light on Queen City Drive. The victim advised the Nissan then drove off, failing to stop after the crash. West Side Neighbors Correct Commissioners
The West Side Neighborhood Association continues to question the Allegany County Commissioners on what could be construed as favoritism within the bidding process on the development plans for the land on Sedgewick Street. Max Green of the neighborhood group spoke on the Dave Norman show Wednesday to corroborate dates that Commission President Dave Caporale had incorrectly given regarding a baseball game that county employees and builder D.R. Horton representatives attended. When asked if the West Side group’s continued pursuit of the matter indicated some sort of vendetta against the county, Green answered in the negative.
Cannabis Tax Revenue May Exceed $36 Million
The State of Maryland has collected $12 million dollars in tax revenues since July in legalized cannabis sales. Cannabis became legal to sell in the state on July 1 at a tax rate of 9% for commercial sales. November saw the largest month yet with $75 million in sales across the state. In the Western 4 counties of Maryland, $1.5 million in tax revenue was realized. Of that amount, 5% is returned to the counties. The State’s Office of Social Equity receives 35% of the tax revenue and then distributes it back to the counties through the Community Reinvestment and…
New Mountain Biking Team Being Formed
Plans are afoot for the Cumberland area to have a new kind of sports team. With the help of the owner of Wheelz Up in Cumberland, a team is being assembled to become part of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association or NICA – a nationwide mountain biking program. Described as an alternative to mainline sports, Mandela Echefu says it is a sport where the whole family can participate… Currently there are competitions in Garrett County that bring in thousands of bikers, but Echefu has a vision for a competitive trail to be located withn the City…
Preservation Plan Can Advance City In Many Areas
The final version of Cumberland’s Historic Preservation Plan was unveiled at this week’s Mayor and City Council meeting. The project has been in the works since last year when the City contracted with consultants The Lakota Group from Chicago to develop a plan. On Wednesday, December 20th, 2023, The Cumberland City Police arrested Shane Christopher Sneathen, 35, of Cumberland MD. Sneathen was arrested on an outstanding Arrest Warrant issued by the Allegany County District Court for an incident that had occurred on December 19th. On that date, Sneathen had been contacted by police and was found to be in possession of CDS paraphernalia. At that time, Sneathen had given officers a false name. On Wednesday, December 20th, 2023, The Cumberland City Police arrested Jessica Nicole Porter, 35, of Cumberland MD. Porter was arrested on an outstanding Bench Warrant issued by the Allegany County District Court on December 14th. On that date, it is alleged failed to appear in court on a previous charge of CDS paraphernalia possession.
